My pleasure, I hope you figure out what the problem is! It might be a setting in the mouse driver, or even the mouse driver itself that causes the misbehavior. When you have a large driver that offers pages of options, see if you can't replace it with a simple generic one from MS (even if the mouse is from a different brand). I've found that those often work better with fewer hiccups.

Just Right-click on the saved query in Found Files and use Properties to change its conditions and re-run it.

I'd like to be able to specify my "Restrict search to:" selection to a manually entered location.

I think you'd have to change the 'Current Folder' value for a similar effect.

The inbuilt help is a little unclear as to what words like 'label' mean and the effects they have.

A volume label is a name that you have assigned to a drive. In the DOS days we would use the VOLUME command for that, under Windows it can be set through the drive properties.

Yes, but that applies to regular local drives, not (necessarily) network drives.

From the Volume Properties popup I currently have

Volume alias is blank.

Ordinarily, volume labels are shown here as 'Label', but from this, I guess that ThumbsPlus shows the share name there when it's a network drive (I do not use any network drives here, so cannot verify).

Q1: is 'label' in the volume properties always just the sharename on the NAS drive?

It might well be (or, maybe it depends on your 'Volume Matching Strategy' settings in options | Preferences | Thumbnails)

Q2: is what you refer to as 'drive volume label' the sharename  or is it what Thumbs calls 'Network'?

Neither; a volume label is a distinct drive property. However, in the case of network drives, ThumbsPlus can use their share names instead to identify drives.

Q3 : if I move the complete structure with thumbs folders  from \\BUFFALO\xavi$ to \\OTHERDRIVE\xavi$ 
       are there settings of the Preferences
       'Match network volume using share name' and 'ignore network drive labels'
       that will allow me to simply copy over and match Thumbs database to the moved data?

I think that should work, but there's another problem. When you use a network drive, the server name is also used in the drive identification/matching process. So, you'd have to name the new NAS "BUFFALO" too. OR, you could go into your database using an appropriate tool and change the server and share names into whatever they will be in your new network configuration.

But that is assuming that your current NAS would be replaced by a new one from one moment to the next. If you can just add a new NAS instead, so that both old and new are simultaneously connected, you can use ThumbsPlus to do all the copying of images from old to new and it will automatically copy the thumbnails, keywords, annotations, etc, in the database as it copies the files. Afterwards, you could remove the old NAS, delete all its (then orphaned) thumbnails from the database, and use Compact & Repair to recover the used space in the database.

It might well be a bug. Mine is set to 'one row at a time' which works as expected, but the 'use Windows' setting causes it to jump more like 2 windows at a time.

As explained, you either split the image into 4 images manually and print each one separately, or you find a program that can print an image over multiple pages (I have no recommendations there).

(having said that, if you're not a 'pixel peeper', a 2550 x 3300 image like from your example can still look pretty good on a 17x22" print).

Well, the dimensions of the digital image have no relation to the printing size (except that the print, when viewed from the same distance, will be less sharp the larger you print it).

If you want to print an image over 4 sheets, you should either use a program that lets you print on multiple sheets (not many do), or you should split the image into four images, and print each separately on a single sheet.

To split an image into 4 using ThumbsPlus, you could do this:

  • Load the original image.
  • Press Ctrl-A to select it in full.
  • Using the mouse, grab and drag one of the thin sides to 50% of the long side. for example, if the image is 800x1000 pixels, you'd grab the '800' side and drag it to where the new selection area is 800x500. Then grab the new thin side ('500') and drag it to where the selected area is 400x500 in size -- in other words, exactly 1/4th of the original image.
  • Use File | Save Selection As to save the selected quarter image.
  • Then move the selection area to another corner using either the arrow keys or the mouse (grab+drag the center of the selection), and use Save Selection As again to save that quadrant, too.
  • Repeat for the 2 remaining quadrants and then you'll have four image files, each containing a different 1/4 section of the original image. You can print each one of those onto a sheet of its own.

Note that you will need a pretty large image if you want it to look sharp when printed on such a large area! When the print is meant to be viewed from close-up, a resolution of 300 dots per inch is recommended. 200 dpi is fine for a poster-size print that hangs on a wall.  So, say you print it on four 8x11" sheets, then the total area would be 16x22 inch. For a 200 dpi print, you'd need an image that's  3200 (16x200) by 4400 (22x200) pixels in size. That's how large the original photo, scan or drawing would have to be. Enlarging that digital image wouldn't help, because enlarging doesn't increase the level of detail in the image.

Are you using the same type and size of images as before?

Is editing images in ThumbsPlus the only thing that is slow, or do other tasks in ThumbsPlus, or other programs, now work more slowly too?

You could try this: Exit ThumbsPlus, locate your Thumbs8.ini configuration file and make a backup copy of it. Then open it in Notepad and add this section to it:


This would disable the built-in virtual memory manager - but that will likely only make a difference if not just the editing but also the loading of image files has become slow.

My guess would be that you may have used File | Jpeg | Turn, which is a lossless operation that cannot be undone (the file is directly modified).

The regular Turn operations under Transform | Turn & Mirror are undoable (well, except if Undo has been turned off to save memory. In the viewer/editor, see View | Preferences | Tab:Editing | Disable Undo if that might be the case).

I have been through Preferences and Customize but can see no button for Undo/redo.

Undo/Redo are only available in the Viewer/Editor.

If that's where you were looking, try View | Customize | Tab:Toolbars and turn on the 'Edit' toolbar - that's whereyou should find them.

Does it have to do with how I shut things down that leaves me listed as an active user.

Yes, if you don't shut ThumbsPlus down correctly, you may get this error about active users. To close ThumbsPlus, use the small 'x' button in the top-right corner of the window, or press Alt-F4 on the keyboard, or click File | Exit in the menu.

About once the month my just for me database tells me there are too many users and I have to wait a very long time for it to clear itself up.
ThumbsPlus keeps track of active users through a field in the database. Could it be that your database is read-only or you (sometimes) don't have write-access to it?

PS: instead of switching to the only-you database after launching TP, you could also make a shortcut on your desktop that specifies the database (full path, between quotes if it contains spaces) on the command line.

Fellow user also once took the trouble of explaining how he got things to work with MySQL and PostgreSQL, and that message seems to have disappeared as well. I will quote it here from my backup of it, in case it may contain any useful clues for you:

Since 2007 I am using TP7 with a MySQL database. It still runs on a NAS-Box.
Now I decided to migrate to TP9sp2. As I have another application running a lot faster with PostgreSQL than with MySQL, I wanted to run all with PostgreSQL.
But after several unsuccessful days with PostgreSQL I switched to MySQL.
By the way: The database conversion TP7 -> TP9 did not work.

But now TP9 works with MySQL!
A lot of time I lost because of using the most recent MySQL ODBC-driver version 5.2 that I used without any problems for my TP7-database. Version 5.1 works fine with TP9 - version 5.2 does NOT! You need the 32bit ODBC driver version! The 64bit ODBC driver does not work with ThumbsPlus.
You have to put in
in the field "Initial Statement:" of the MySQL Connector/ODBC Data Source Configuration. All the rest I left as is.
If you have Win7 64bit, you cannot use the default ODBC configuration tool. You have to use C:\windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe . Otherwise you cannot configure
the 32bit ODBC-driver.

I created an empty database with default settings (UTF8 character set):
Then I used the SQL-File to create all tables and the necessary entries in table "ThumbsPlusDatabase".
TP9 now could connect and I scanned all 120.000 pictures without troubles.
After some queries which where very slow I remembered, that the default engine for MySQL tables is "MyISAM".
Queries are a lot faster with "InnoDB" engine! Therefore I converted the tables to "InnoDB":
Now queries are fast again!


But I was not happy, because I was not able to run TP9 with my PostgreSQL server :-(
Again and again I have read the forum thread of KurtA, heinzelrumpel and Daan van Rooijen (thank you a lot!). Finally TP9 now also runs with PostgreSQL 9.2 on my NAS box.
What I have done:
Created a database with ENCODING=UTF8, collation and character type set to en_US.UTF-8
Downloaded the SQL file from
Changed "idFileType" to "idFiletype" in table "Thumbnail" (I have not tested, but I think it is not
anymore necessary with ThumbsPlus 9 SP2; I did not change the table name "ThumbsPlusDatabase" to "thumbsplusdatabase").
I used this SQL-script for creation of the tables and all necessary entries in the table "ThumbsPlusDatabase"
Important!: I have lost a lot of time because by mistake I created the tables as admin-user. So the owner of these tables was not the thumbsplus-user. Therefore PostgreSQL did not allow access when I tried to connect with TP9. I had to change the owner of all tables to thumbsplus-user.

Next I downloaded and installed PostgreSQL ODBC driver
Again - you have to use C:\windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe on a Win7 64bit system. Otherwise you cannot configure 32bit ODBC drivers!
When selecting the ODBC-driver choose "PostgreSQL Unicode" (NOT ANSI!).
Fill in all connection data (server name, name of database, user and password). Then click the button "Datasource" an go to "Page 2".
Activate "bytea as LO"!
All the rest I left as is.

Now I could connect TP9 with my new PostgreSQL database.
Some hours later I can tell you now, the performance seems to be even better than MySQL with InnoDB engine.
All 120.000 pictures are scanned and I will begin to test and check if all runs well. If so, I will uninstall my good old TP7 and delete the corresponding MySQL database.
