General Discussion / Re: renaming all my source files
« on: 2023-11-04 17:22:20 »
since i wanted to simply rename the files but keep the galleries and assigned galleries intact as well as whatever keywords have been created, i thought i had to rename them in tp5. i thought if i renamed the files in windows things would get messed up.

Correct!

well that didn't happen. i hilited all the files in the source folder, and while the option was there, i got an error message saying i could not rename

Is that all that it said? I guess that might happen if some of the files are read-only or otherwise write-protected.

i will take a snapshot of the error message...my mistake for forgetting

General Discussion / renaming all my source files
« on: 2023-11-04 16:15:00 »
over the years the naming and thus the order on my source files(as i mentioned earlier they are image files for my work) have gotten messy. files i started out naming in one way when i first used tp5,,,to a file system i started naming to make more sense of everything,,,to misnamed files.

so i decided to rename all of them and clean up everything. so i used a computer i never use to create a test tp5 to make sure it would work.

since i wanted to simply rename the files but keep the galleries and assigned galleries intact as well as whatever keywords have been created, i thought i had to rename them in tp5. i thought if i renamed the files in windows things would get messed up.

well that didn't happen. i hilited all the files in the source folder, and while the option was there, i got an error message saying i could not rename

was my thinking correct and if so why did i get the error message?

Not sure what you mean by 'source folder'. I assume it's a regular folder on your harddrive.

Do you recognize the images as belonging to you? Have you (or anyone else in your household) been using other image browsing / viewing / editing software, or file management software, that may have put them there? Or that may have created temporary files there?

ThumbsPlus is just showing you what is (or has been) there. If the presence of the images bothers you, why don't you just delete them or move them somewhere else?

Maybe you can re-make the thumbnails in that folder to make sure that they represent the current situation. In that case, I would:

- Set ThumbsPlus to show files of ALL types (not just 'selected')
- Then I would select all thumbnails in that folder and press Shift+Del to delete them.
- Then press F5 to refresh the thumbnail listing.
- Then do 'Thumbnail | Scan Folder' (Shift+Alt+F3) to create new thumbnails for all files in the folder.

These instructions would work with the current version of ThumbsPlus, but your TP5 may use different shortcuts or menu items to accomplish these tasks.

it doesn't bother me per se because all my images have been categorized in galleries.

by source folder i mean the folder with all my images that i have tp5 set to open to. there are 5000 images.

i am an artist. i use these images as source material for my paintings. because i use tp5 with a database built in windowsXP,  i have had to install the tp5 program differently, as well as create a dummy folder so that the data and galleries and stuff work. i have not updated to tp10.

so as per your direction several years ago when i moved from XP to w7 i had to install things a little differently,,,,change the C drive label to it's label in XP (DRIVE_C), install tp5 in Cdrive not the 86 folder, and set up a dummy folder in program files

anyway i wanted to know where these 14files came from, and yes they are my files. they should not be there at the top of the image folder when i open tp5. it should be newest to oldest.

the way i look at if, it's an indication that something is not right

General Discussion / what the heck happened
« on: 2023-11-02 18:49:53 »
i just opened my tp5 in w7,,,and i have tp set to open within the source folder.

THERE ARE 14 IMAGES at the beginning that should not be there.

i have tp set to open the source folder as "numeric/ descending". so the order should be recent to oldest. but as i said there are 14 older images now prioritized at the top. furthermore i cannot open them in tp - these 14 have a little icon in the upper right (see attached)

as tp5 is a program i use constantly, the last time i used tp5 was yesterday. i use tp5 everyday, and i haven't made any additions or changes other than several days ago when i deleted some orphaned folders as instructed in another discussion

i don't think i can add anything more until i get a reply because i frankly dont know what's going on

btw, i just went to another computer which mirrors this one. both mirror each other and that other computer is fine,,,so somehow these images have  placed themselves at the top in my source folder in this particular w7 machine

update....so i copied the td4 from the good unchanged computer to this one with the prob but that didn't help. the glitchy tp5 in the computer is doing something seperate and apart from the established td4

ThumbsPlus v10 Questions / transfer data from tp5 to tp10
« on: 2021-11-20 07:57:06 »
so i'm seriously thinking of getting 10 now that i bought a w10 laptop. i've successfully installed tp5 and everything is fine, just like when i transferred from xp to w7.

but can i migrate all my tp5 stuff to tp10?

11
Well, there are no guarantees that an older version like TP5 will work on Windows 10. I don't know anyone who uses TP on a Surface Pro and I'm not familiar with that specific type of computer. On the other hand, I do not know of any reasons why it would not work, either..

If you want to keep everything, you must:

- Copy your images to exactly the same location on the new computer (the folder structure must remain identical)
- Make sure that the volume label of the drive on which the images are stored, is identical to that on the old computer.
- Then install your old TP into a folder of its own (Not in Program Files or any other system folder. For instance: C:\Thumbs5).
- Copy your thumbs.td4 database into that folder, overwriting the empty .td4 that the installer had put there.
- Then launch TP and see if everything works as hoped for. As your first action, you may want to turn off "Options | Preferences | Thumbnails | Make Thumbnails Automatically", to be sure  that the thumbnails that you see, are the same ones that you already had on the old computer and not new ones that TP has been making on the fly.

Alternatively, I guess you could purchase an upgrade to TP10 and install it on your current computer (in a different folder than your old TP5 -- you can run multiple versions side by side, as long as each is in a folder of its own. Contrary to TP5, TP10 can be installed to a regular folder in Program Files). Convert your database to the new format. When that works, you could install TP10 on your new Surface Pro, copy the image files and database, and that should work.

As to this Surface Pro, it might be wise to ask Cerious if they are aware of any issues running TP on it.

how do i do this? do you mean just updating td4 in tp10

12
Do you want to keep your database (for all the keywords, annotations, off-line items, etc, that are in it) or would it be OK if you had to make a new one?

i want to keep everything. i have thousands of images on file. therefore i need to migrate everything intact. if tp5-td4/windows7 to surface pro/w10 is impossible, i need to know a work around. currently i DO NOT have surface pro/w10. i need to know if it's do-able before purchasing a surface pro

i may have asked this before but i lost the thread.

can i migrate from w7 to w10?

ThumbsPlus 5 was developed in the days of Windows 98 and XP. It was never tested on any current Windows version.

In other words, you can try but it's on your own risk.

what would i need to do to migrate everything to w10 or the surface pro?

Would that be on a new computer or are you just upgrading the Windows version on your current computer?

top5 works on w7. I just do what you told me to do and it's fine. do you think for seamless and safety sake I should at least go to another version of tp and import all data from 5?

and I am thinking of getting a surface pro which is w10, and why I want to know

General Discussion / old tp on w10 i may have asked before

i may have asked this before but i lost the thread. can i migrate from w7 to w10?

history: i used to do all my work on wXP w/ tp5. with daan's help i'm on w7 now with the following,,,, tp5 is installed on C: instead of  in /program files and the source image folder in /program files

what would i need to do to migrate everything to w10 or the surface pro?

sorry for the late reply. i forgot.

anyway, i always make sure the volume label is the same. everything else is a check and double check

if you can get past the watermark, take a look at the system help "platform". it says XP. this is a 32bit w7 os
