That's good news! I didn't know that TP would use an existing .typ file from a previous release, but it explains what we both have seen.

Hi Bryan,

I wish I could help here, but I'm afraid that I can't. I'm not sure if the installer actually makes those filetype associations, or if TP9 itself does so when it is launched for the first time. If it's the latter, you might be able to simply edit thumbs.typ (as explained in my earlier response in this thread) before launching TP9, or replace it with an earlier copy that has the associations turned off. I'm sorry, but I don't remember how the installer works exactly, having used it only once myself. I don't recall having any problems with filetype associations myself, though, so there must be a way to avoid them.

btw, I am using a (highly recommended) real-time system monitor utility named WinPatrol Plus that alerts me whenever a program is trying to do something questionable or unsafe, such as adding a boot-time startup program or a browser add-on or changing (certain) filetype associations. I don't think that I used it myself for TP9, but if you happen to have WinPatrol too, you could tell it to monitor the relevant filetypes (jpg, gif, avi, etc) and then it would help you to quickly restore your associations if something went wrong.

> Ah ha! So removing my two mov files fixed the issue. So ThumbsPlus 7 works with multimedia files and 8 and 9 don't.

Well, no.. assuming no v8-introduced bugs interfere, it should still work. I guess you just had the .mov files set up correctly in TP7 (that is: you had a compatible codec installed, and the right definition under Options | Preferences | Filetypes) but not so in v8 and v9. I don't use MOV files myself, but there's probably a good codec for them in the [link=http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm]K-Lite codec pack[/link] that several people here like a lot.

And I'm still mourning with you.. I was their distributor for much of western Europe :-D

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Next version?

It is being worked on, but I don't know of any fixed schedule.

The only slideshow bug that I'm aware of -but it's a weird one- is when you run it in a folder that has more than a few subfolders. This may cause it to crash. One user reported that this happened with only 2 subfolders in his slideshow folder, but I had to create 7 subfolders before it would crash. Anyway, maybe you could try in a folder with no subfolders to see what happens.

Also, are you sure that your selection of files doesn't include any blank, corrupt or multimedia files and that it's not related to your timing settings or any effects that you may be using? That is: if you select only a few JPGs, run it without effects and with manual control, you still get those black screens?

Off-topic: Have a look at [link=http://www.zendogsoftware.com/About_zl.asp]http://www.zendogsoftware.com/About_zl.asp[/link]. Zen Light is a screen saver that creates beautiful fractal-like images that respond to your audio-in signal. It was written by David Johnston of Cool Edit (now Adobe Audition) fame.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / database does not keep thumbs
« on: 2013-09-22 19:00:22 »
It sounds like your Windows user account has no rights to write to the database file.
See Help | System Information to find out what the database path is. I suspect it's in a folder that can't be written to (eg. anything under Program Files in Vista and newer).

You could use Database | New to create a database elsewhere and see if that works better. If so, use Options | Preferences | Startup | Initial Database to make that your default database.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Dealing with moire
« on: 2013-09-16 14:36:51 »
> Is there any way to deal with moire?

No, and until recently no software even existed that could deal with moire. Someone must have figured out how to do it though, because it is now built into many digital cameras (where it replaces expensive analog filters). Still, I haven't seen it in software yet.

Moire most often occurs when you reduce the size of an image. One thing that you can do to prevent moire is to blur the image (Image|Filter|Blur) before resizing it. When you resize the image, use either the Downsample or Bi-cubic algorithm option. Afterwards, try using Image|Filter|Sharpen|Unsharp Mask to re-sharpen the resized image.

Hi Dave,

Yes, the implementation of these filetype associations is frustrating. When you tell ThumbsPlus to associate a filetype to itself, it doesn't treat that as a one-time command like all other programs known to me do, but as a permanent setting. In other words: it will re-associate that filetype to itself everytime that you launch it, even if you had since associated that filetype to a different program.

This behavior is turned on or off through the "Associate this file type with ThumbsPlus" setting in each filetype definition, that you'll find under Options | Preferences | Filetypes (pick a filetype and press Edit to get to its settings).

Of course, this means that if you want to turn this off for all 100+ (or whatever) filetypes, you'll be spending quite a lot of time..

There's a workaround that should work faster, but it may require some advanced editing skills. The settings are saved in a textfile named Thumbs9.typ. Its entries look like this:

[FileTypes]
.ai=Adobe Illustrator|Raster|Cerious Plug-in|plug_gs.tpp|Association||Internal||0|2|
.art=AOL Art|Raster|Internal||Association||Internal||0|2|
.au=Audio File|Sound|Internal||Association||None||0|5|

When the 'associate this file type' option has been set, then the second-last number will be a 1 instead of a 0. In my example above, the setting is off for all three filetypes. Had they been on, the definitions would have looked like this:

[FileTypes]
.ai=Adobe Illustrator|Raster|Cerious Plug-in|plug_gs.tpp|Association||Internal||1|2|
.art=AOL Art|Raster|Internal||Association||Internal||1|2|
.au=Audio File|Sound|Internal||Association||None||1|5|

So, with that knowledge, you can edit the file directly. Be sure to do so only when TP is not running, otherwise it will overwrite your changes when you exit. You should not launch TP until you have finished editing and you have saved Thumbs9.typ.

If you don't know where Thumbs9.typ is on your system, look in the program under Help | System Info and check the path that is mentioned as your 'preferences path'.

I hope this helps!

I've downloaded a Sony A300 .arw file and sadly can't get it to work either.

From reports that I read elsewhere about other programs' troubles reading A300 exif data, I suspect that DCRAW (which both the DCRAW plugin and Digicam, and a ton of other raw-capable software, are based on) doesn't support it. If other programs do support it, they may have reverse engineered the format, or Sony has supplied the required code to them.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Rotating images doesn't work
« on: 2013-08-21 08:48:22 »
Hi Laura,

You can download a suitable portrait-oriented straight-out-of-camera Panasonic TZ40 sample image here: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8396/8644962327_baf3bc813a_o_d.jpg

I'm seeing the same problem with my own files from an Olympus E-510 though, so I think it's a generic problem.

When "Rotate based on XMP/EXIF orientation" in Opt|Pref|Metadata is on, TP does display the image correctly when it is first opened, but then seems to fail to reset the orientation flag from left-bottom to left-top when it is saved in an EXIF-compatible format (JPG, TIF, etc). Saving as BMP works fine.

Another bit of confusion can be seen in the Properties dialog of a re-saved image: The Orientation value in the Database tab will say "0° (normal)", but the metadata in the Info tab still shows "Orientation: Left-bottom".

Agreed!

However, you can use Ctrl-Tab to switch to a different panel. It works differently, but to some extend it provides the same functionality.

When you are in the panel switch window, you have to keep Ctrl pressed down while you navigate to the name of the panel of your choice. You can use Tab to move to the next panel in the list, Shift-Tab to move to the previous, or use the arrow keys. When you let go of Ctrl, you're taken to the selected panel.

1. This is unrelated to ThumbsPlus.
2. Avoid that any new data (or even temp files) are written to the harddisk in question
3. Locate good data recovery software and try to recover the files. If the software has special provisions for recognition and recovery of the particular filetype that you lost (e.g. JPG), that would be a benefit. The recovery software should write the files to a different medium, e.g. an external drive.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Bulk Rename
« on: 2013-08-13 13:47:20 »
> So how is that achieved?

Using the auto-rename feature that you supposedly already found, and which replaces the current name.

Are you sure that Windows (which version?) recognizes the second monitor - when you right-click on your desktop and pick "screen resolution" (or Properties | Settings) are both monitors shown? Can you get anything else to show on the 2nd monitor? Are you running a screen management tool that might be interfering? As for the help, yes, much of it is outdated and I think that particular line only meant to say that it doesn't work on Win95.

> Is there a switch I can turn on & off so that this step is not performed?

Yes, the -notwain commandline parameter. The -safe parameter does the same thing but additionaly disables some other parts of the program.

> Looking at my file system, the smartphone was set up as two drives but that SHOULD NOT make a difference, should it?

It might act as a twain-compatible imaging device as well..
