I tried running the TP8 installation. It did not give me the option of uninstalling. I thought that I would go ahead and install but it stopped with a error box that said simply "Error". No error number, no further information.
After this the program said "ThumbsPlus Setup is complete." and below that "The InstallAware Wizard has failed:"Fatal error during installation". Please check your settings and try again."
I tried running the TP8 installation again and this time used the option to put everything in the same folder, which it called "old style". This worked. I now have ThumbsPlus 8 working. I hesitate to uninstall this when it is working but I will try it and perhaps it will get rid of the registry entries that are preventing the version 9 install.
I really appreciate the advice. Cerious Support just ignores me.
