is there a way to batch edit user fields?

You can select multiple image files, then use 'Thumbnail | Assign User Fields' to add the same user field value to multiple files.

Or, if you mean if user fields can be edited as part of a Batch Process: no, I don't think that's possible.

If you want to accomplish yet something else, let me know and I'll think it over :)
