When I select the "report" layout for thumbnails, that is very close to what I want on paper.

Is there a way to print a catelog with a layout similar (or identical) to that thumbnail layout?

I'm afraid not. In a catalog (or contact sheet) the thumbnails are always laid out in a horizontal direction (i.e. next to eachother), unlike the vertically oriented report view (with one thumbnail per line).
