ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Automatic Slideshow
« on: 2014-02-04 12:37:28 »
Are you using v7 or earlier? I don't think tpcmd works with v8 and newer.

Tpcmd.exe probably has to reside in the folder where ThumbsPlus itself is installed, and may have to be executed from that same folder. Also, I'd use a short folder name for the folder that holds the images, eg. C:\SLIDES.

Alternatively, you could use Image | Build Slideshow in v7 to make a self-contained slideshow in .exe format that might suit your purposes.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Back from v9/8.1 to v.7?

> Currently, I'm on my way using MS-Access to generate a plain textfile with all information (keywords, galleries, annotations) I need. This textfile I will use to add to the metadata. (Current plan is probably using exiftool).

Or: Image | Batch Edit Metadata to add the keywords and annotations to the files' metadata? You could use keywords to add the names of galleries that images belong to (i.e. go to a gallery and add an appropriate keyword to all images in it). Then thumbnail in v7, at the same time copying keywords and annotations to the database. Then select all images that have a specific 'gallery'-keyword and create a gallery for them.

Ctrl-F5 will manually refresh the tree, hopefully revealing your USB device.

General Discussion / migrate database from 1 pc to another
« on: 2014-01-29 09:35:10 »
Well, it looks like "Rogers laptop C Drive" was the volume label of drive C: in the old laptop. You could open Explorer on the new laptop (after exiting TP7 there), right-click on drive C: and pick Properties from the bottom of the context menu that appears, then change its name to "Rogers laptop C Drive" (without the quotes) too. Then launch TP7 to see if that did the trick.

According to TP7's documentation it also uses the drive serial number to match fixed drives, but I don't think that's correct. And where the computer name is concerned, I think that's used only for images that were thumbnailed through a network. So, I'm hopeful that just editing the volume label will solve this problem for you.

The volume label(s) of the drive(s) on which your images reside must be the same as on the previous laptop too (change these from outside of ThumbsPlus, without TP running).

If that doesn't solve it, the computer name could still be a problem. You could try changing it on the new laptop, but if you prefer not to have two identically named computers, you could open the database in a database editor like MDB Viewer Plus (freeware from http://www.alexnolan.net/software/mdb_viewer_plus.htm) and change the relevant value to that of the new laptop. As always, keep a backup of your database.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Can't See Thumbs
« on: 2013-11-01 21:08:53 »
Maybe your database is in a (subfolder of) a read-only system folder such as Program Files. If it can't be written to, no thumbnails can be made (see Help | System Info | Database Path).

You can create a new database elsewhere through Database | New. When you have done that and it works, you can use Options | Preferences | Startup to make the new database your Initial Database (i.e. the one loaded when ThumbsPlus is launched).

817
Having fiddled with it some more.. when I turn off the "rebuild thumbnails at printer resolution" option, I get just a blank page too! (well, except for a header line). So, I suspect that's the problem.

818
Have you tried Options | Preferences | Advanced | "Disable banded printing" ? That helps with some inkjet printers.

If you spend a lot of time experimenting with that Print Catalog function, you may want to turn 'Use wizard dialogs' off under Options | Preferences | General. That way you get a regular tabbed dialog that makes it easier to jump from one page to another.

As for me, it seems to work fine here, but I print to a PDF file printer instead of to an actual device.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / PDF Plugin
« on: 2013-10-23 08:08:13 »
Weird, it looks like my message about the PDF plugin was deleted!!

Here's where you can get Ghostscript (get the 32b version):  http://www.ghostscript.com/download/

Here's a link to the plug-in: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ucyhsr7e15hgd8/plug_gs.zip?dl=0

Instructions in brief:

[*] Install 32 bit Ghostscript on your system.
[*] Download and unzip the plug-in (plug_gs.tpp) and place it in your plugins folder. For ThumbsPlus 7 that should be simply its program folder and for TP9 I think that's a subfolder named plugins.
    [*] Launch ThumbsPlus
[*] Tell ThumbsPlus where to find Ghostscript:
in TP7: Options | File Plugins | Ghostscript PS/EPS/PDF | Ghostscript installation location
in TP9: Options | Ghostscript PS/EPS/PDF | Ghostscript installation location
This location should point to the Ghostscript DLL. On my own system, it is "C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.64\bin\gsdll32.dll".

[*] Update the filetype definition for PDF files (and any other filetypes that you want to be loaded through Ghostscript such as PS, EPS and/or AI) by setting the 'Load Using' value to 'Cerious Plug-in', and in the field to the right of that choose 'plug_gs.tpp'. The filetype definitions are under Options | Preferences | Filetypes. Or you can just right-click on a file of the desired type and choose 'Configure type' from its context menu.[/list]

    I hope this helps!

    > I am having success doing it this way, but it also worked when I dragged a folder with several subfolders.  What is the reason you recommend to do the subfolders first?

That's how it had to be done in the past (v7), but if it worked for you, maybe it's no longer necessary with v9!

    > Is the best approach to drag the grayed-out thumbnails to their corresponding actual file location [..]

Yes, but keep a backup of your database file and be sure to have "Options | Preferences | Thumbnails | Auto-remove Orphans" off. Also, drag-n-drop any subfolders before you do the folders.

    > The even more useful criteria such as "Keyword" and "Gallery" are only stored in the database.

Keywords can be saved in the (JPG, PNG, TIFF) image files themselves as IPTC information, as per my earlier message. It's quite easy to do with TP7.

    824
Hi -- I'm too busy for a full reply to your questions, but in brief, here's what you can do:

    - Get ThumbsPlus v7 sp2, which has a full-featured IPTC editor. Maybe if you contact Cerious Software's Laura Shook (lshook@cerious.com) she'll agree to give you a discounted or free 'downgrade' license. Note: TP7 does not support Unicode in filenames etc, so if that should be a requirement, this is not going to work.

    TP7 sp2 can be downloaded from http://www.cerious.com/archive.shtml.

-In TP7, go to Options | Preferences | General and turn ON the option "Retain original file date/time when quick process turning or editing IPTC."

    - Assign database keywords to your images using Ctrl-K (which will build a drop-down list). To assign multiple keywords at once, separate them with semicolons, for example: "rabbit;goat;cow" (no spaces!).

    - If you want TP to automatically generate other database keywords when files are thumbnailed, see Options | Preferences | Keywords for various options.

    - If you want to edit your keyword list, see File | Database | Edit Keywords

    - When you have assigned database keywords to your files, it's time to move them into the IPTC headers of the image files themselves. Select the files, press Ctrl-I to invoke the IPTC editor. From its menu, choose Keywords | Combine with database. Then press OK. This will copy the database keywords into the IPTC headers of your image files (JPG, TIFF or PNG), without recompressing them.

You could do your entire collection of files this way. However, for new files that you add in the future, you may want to reverse the order, and add keywords to them through the IPTC editor, which TP7 can automatically copy into the database through the relevant setting in Options | Preferences | Keywords. That way be an efficient method that still keeps your in-file and in-database keywords synched.

    - To search for keywords (database keywords -- in-file keywords can't be searched), use Edit | Find by Query | tab:Keyword.

    I hope this helps.

    > 1. I am having a problem with the section process in the Similar files Edit: Pull-down window.  I can't get the search to take place in my selected folder(or tree or database).

Do you mean Edit | Find Similar? That always operates on the current folder, or on the current tree (folder plus its subfolders), or on the entire database. And that works fine here..

    > 2. How do I clear the Files Folder images after finding them? I can't seem to clear them?

Do you mean the "Similar Images" gallery that is created in the Found Files section of the tree? Right-click on it and choose "Remove Found List".

    > 3. How do I tag, for deletion, the files that I want to delete?

Press INS to tag, Ctrl-INS to Untag. Or right-click on the thumbnail and use Thumbnail | Tag. When done, use Edit | Select By | Tagged to select all tagged files. Then press DEL to delete them. (btw, before starting this, you may want to do Ctrl-A, Ctrl-INS to untag all files before you start tagging them for deletion. This just in case that some files that you don't want to delete were already tagged).

    Bonus info:
    - You can also search for files similar to a particular image. Select that image and use Edit | Find | Tab:Image Similarity.
    - You can also sort the thumbnail list on Similarity. This is slow with large folders though.
