Font sort order - by Filename or Internal Name
« on: 2013-08-06 21:41:37 »
Fonts in the system Font folder display according to their filename rather than their internal name and are sorted accordingly. If I view fonts stored elsewhere, they display by their internal name and are sorted more logically. Sorting by filename has its uses, but the font's internal name is more useful when searching for a named font, which is the way other programs display them. To view all of my fonts sorted by font name, I have to copy them all to another folder.

Am I overlooking something, or can you give us more control over how fonts are labeled--by filename or internal name?

Options | Preferences | Thumbnails | Show font names

"When this is selected, ThumbsPlus will scan font files and display the font names. It will display these instead of the file names. Additionally, the font names will be green if the font is installed."

This only works if I have also checked

Options | Preferences | Disks & Folders | Show Windows root folder

under the "Include the following special folders" section at the bottom.

Otherwise, the system Fonts folder will still display by filename.

Interesting.. if I have "Windows root folder" off, I don't see any files at all in the special Fonts folder.

I'm using Windows XP Pro sp3 32b. Which OS do you have?

To Laura: Could you please report this to Phillip?

I use Windows 7, 64-bit.  I reported the problem of an empty Fonts folder in an earlier version of ThumbsPlus.  They told me about the "Include Windows root folder," but also fixed the problem so fonts should display in the special Fonts folder even if the Windows folder is hidden.  Maybe the fix doesn't work with Windows XP.

Are you running the latest build (3928) of ThumbsPlus 9?

Including "Windows root folder" should allow you to see all subfolders of "C:\Windows." Try navigating there to see if files in C:\Windows\Fonts are visible.

I should have said, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts with "Windows root folder" unchecked.  It should still be visible. This was part of the the fix.

Yes.

Nope, it doesn't here.. When the "Windows root folder" option is unchecked, no entry for C:\Windows appears in the tree (not under C: and not as a separate special folder entry - if such a thing exists). When it is checked, an entry appears under C:.

(This is regardless of whether the "Use Windows 7/Vista tree appearance" is on)

The only way for me (on XP Pro sp3 32b) to see fonts is by having both "Fonts" and "Windows root folder" on in Opt|Pref|D&F, and then browsing to either Fonts or C:\Windows\Fonts in the tree. ThumbsPlus then shows the correct names (DOS-name or internal font name) and sorts them correctly, too.
