If your ThumbsPlus default database has hit the 2 Gb file size limit you have several choices.

To check your current database size go to Database>Statistics "file size in bytes".

A.) You can start over with a brand new database (with or without this 2 Gb size limit).
(Please see FAQ "ThumbsPlus Database choices")

B.) If you have important thumbnail data such as keywords, annotations, udf's, offline thumbnails or galleries that you do not wish to lose you can use a newer option that allows you to GREATLY increase the thumbnail count capacity on an existing database.

Instructions:

BEFORE BEGINNING, make sure that you have a backup of this current important database.

Database>Advanced>Backup

This way you will have it if anything goes amiss with this process. The ThumbsPlus database holds important data that you should always have a copy of. Databases can be damaged in several ways including a crash or a power outage while the ThumbsPlus database is open.

1. Before beginning this process the database needs to be smaller than the 2 Gb size limit. To increase your current database size you will first need to release some space that will allow this option room to do its job.

If there are thumbnails that are old that you do not need any longer, you can remove some of that data from the database.  For example you may have some folders with test images that you do not need thumbnails of.  Right click any folder of this type and go to "remove from folder". This will remove any thumbnails and the associated data for files you do NOT need thumbnails of. (You can always remove some thumbnails that don't have data attached to them and remake the thumbnails after this process has finished as well.)

2.  Run a repair and compact of the database to remove space that has not been recycled. Database>Compact and Repair.

3.  After the compact, run a JPEG compress on the database as well. DATABASE>JPEG COMPRESS (I suggest the quality to be set between 65 and 75.)

**Note that if  you have removed a ton of thumbnails you may decrease the database size enough to continue to use your current database. In this case you can ignore the rest of these instructions.**

Increasing your current database size capacity:

Please note:

1.  You can NOT stop this process once it has been started or the database will be hopelessly confused and you will have to restore the database from backup.

2.  This database size increase process may take a VERY long time even if you have a fast system. You can start the process when you will be away for your computer for a few hours, or before you go to bed.

3.  If ThumbsPlus is already open, close it and relaunch. If you have more than one database make sure that the database that holds all of your data is the database that is open.

Now to increase your current database size capacity, go to DATABASE>ADVANCED>Move Thumbnails to Files. (Image attached.)

4.  Now you just sit back and wait. Again, the process may take a LONG time.

5. When the process is finished, do a another repair and compact of the database and then close ThumbsPlus and relaunch. Your database will now have the increased capacity of 6 to 7 million thumbnails and their associated data.

ThumbsPlus v10 FAQ / ThumbsPlus Database choices
« on: 2019-02-22 14:18:44 »
There is a lot of information about your ThumbsPlus database choices below but it is easy to understand and implement!

The default ThumbsPlus v10 database:

When you first install ThumbsPlus, the default ThumbsPlus v10 database that is used has a 2Gb size limit. (However, for quite some time there have been several ways to configure and/or use other databases or other database options that will allow for either a larger thumbnail count capacity - even when using the default database, or a database without a size limit. More information about this is copied below.)

The current ThumbsPlus default database is an MS Access database with a .tpdb8 extension. In ThumbsPlus v10 build 4015, the following (default) database settings allow for approximately 400,000 thumbnails (if you do NOT use the database option to "store thumbnails in files" that is described further down.)

160 x 160 sized thumbnails
True color (24-bit)
JPEG quality 80%

The amount of thumbnail data that is assigned, (keywords, annotations, udf's, etc..) does have an impact on your database size as well. We have found that when there is a HUGE number of keyword references, this will increase the space used significantly.

ThumbsPlus PRO and Home Network licensed users with non-networked databases, (and those evaluating ThumbsPlus) can begin again with a new database that will store millions of thumbnails using either of the options below.

Creating a new database:

Note that either of these new database choices give you the option to create larger, prettier thumbnails as well without "filling" the database too quickly. (Examples of thumbnail sizes are shown in the first attached image.

To create a new database go to Database>New.

1. Creating the NEW database using the "Thumbnails in files option".

Configuring a new database using the option to "store thumbnails in files" increases the  thumbnail count capacity giving you the room to store between 6 and 7 million thumbnails and their associated data!

The option to store the thumbnails in files, instead of storing the thumbnails in the database itself, stores the thumbnails in a file that resides in the same folder that houses the database. This does increase the amount of space needed for the thumbnail/data storage, but gives you the ability to manage much larger quantities of thumbnails in a single database.

2. In ThumbsPlus v10 SP2 the option to create an SQLite3 database has been improved greatly. To create a new SQLite3 database, choose this option when creating a new database. This type of database has NO SIZE limit except for your amount of disk space. The database extension of a SQLite3 database is .tpdb8s.

There are many ThumbsPlus users that are choosing this SQLite3 database option - and using it very successfully - with the latest v10 build due to the many changes we have recently made. (Note that running multiple thumbnail creation threads at the same time may give errors that will not have an impact on the stability of your database but may be annoying.)

I have attached 2 images that illustrate the steps to take to create one of these new database types.

3.  For corporations with ThumbsPlus Network licenses that have huge archives of images, there are database options other than the ThumbsPlus default databases of .tpdb8 (MS JET) or .tpdb8s (SQLite3). Advanced knowledge of client server database applications such as SQL Server, MYSQL, MariaDB, etc... is recommended for those that wish to use another client server database.

To search for images with multiple keywords:

Go to Edit>Find

1. In the "Filename" tab, choose whether you want to search the entire database or the current folder or tree.

2. You can name your searches individually for future reference if you wish.

Go to the "Keyword" tab.

1. Build the list

2. Scroll the list and choose your first keyword and "Add" it.

3. Scroll the list and choose your second keyword and "Add" it.

4. Choose whether  you want to find all of the thumbnails with ALL of the keywords or whether to find all of the thumbnails with ANY of the selected keywords.

5. Click "OK"

The attached image illustrates this entire process.

Example: Blurring a face in a picture without distorting the entire image

There are many ThumbsPlus Filters that can be tried, but the most commonly used filter to disguise a face is the "Mosiac" filter.

I have attached 3 images that illustrate the "Elliptical" Selection mode, (so you can select the face with a circle), as well as suggestions for ThumbsPlus Filters for this task.

Options>Preferences>General

"Use Windows recycle bin settings"

By default the option to use the Windows recycle bin IS selected. If this has been turned off - when you delete files in ThumbsPlus - the deleted files will NOT go to the recycle bin and will be deleted from your system!

Also, be aware that if the Windows recycle bin is full, does not have enough space allocated for deleted files on the drive you are in, or is not set up to receive deleted files, you can  lose accidentally deleted images as well. (Image attached.)

In any of the cases above the only option would be to restore the files from backup. (I always recommend keeping backups of the ThumbsPlus database. (Database>Advanced>Backup) When backing up the ThumbsPlus database it is a good time to back up your image folders as well.)

ThumbsPlus v10 FAQ / Please explain "Popup Tips"
« on: 2019-02-20 13:33:36 »
When you move the mouse over a file (thumbnail) in the thumbnail view and popup tips are enabled, the thumbnail (if present) will be displayed as an image tip (similar to a standard windows tool tip). If you have unchecked thumbnails, under the Thumbnail Display section, in Options | Preferences - Thumbnail View, the image tips will display immediately on a mouse move. Otherwise, the standard tool tip delay is used before displaying the image tip. To configure when and how popup image tips are displayed, click the Setup button under Options | Preferences - Thumbnail View.

You can disable the image tip display altogether by deselecting the Enable popup tips option in Options | Preferences - Thumbnail View.

An illustration of Popup tips being used is attached.

You can control the maximum file size to load for the preview tab in Options | Preferences | Advanced (Maximum file size for preview tab).

The preview panel displays the currently selected or focused thumbnail view. If the file is inaccessible, a movie, loaded via a Photoshop or other plug-in, or too large, ThumbsPlus just displays the thumbnail.

The attached image illustrates a very large image fitting in the preview window.

ThumbsPlus will show your Internet storage areas such as Dropbos, Onedrive, Cloud (folders). In ThumbsPlus you will find these folders under Users> then your name as shown in the first attached image.

NOTE: You may receive errors when saving edits of images that are being moved or copied in Dropbox or other cloud folders so it is suggested you copy or move files to a local folder to edit them. After the final edits are completed you can copy or move the files back to the internet storage folders.

You may want to add these internet storage folders to your "Favorites" for easier access.

Tree>Add to Favorites and Tree>Edit Favorites

Use these menu selections to add and edit your favorite folders. These favorites are available in several places inside the program (File | Move to and Tree | Go to sub menus, File | Database | Open Database and View Window - File | Save As dialogs, and the location bar) to allow you to go to those folders or move files quickly.

Then you can click on the STAR and quickly go to your favorite folders.

I have attached a 2nd image that illustrates more about "Favorites".

(There is also a pull down menu in the same section of the interface that shows your most recent folder visits.)

Several possibilities

* The file is read only or there is a permissions issue.

* The file is open in another program:

Dropbox or another "Cloud" type folder may have the file open. It's probably best to do the changes in another folder and then move the files to Dropbox after the edits.

ThumbsPlus databases are not designed to be moved to new computers and many find that beginning with a new database is the easiest path. That being said I have copied information below that describes the process to use to attempt to migrate a ThumbsPlus database to a new computer as well as tips about making it easier to re-create database information for future database moves.

The thumbnails and data, ie;, annotations, keywords, udf's, galleries - that your ThumbsPlus database contains are not stored in the images themselves, but in the database.

ThumbsPlus uses the folder structure and the volume labels of your drives to tell itself where the image resides that the thumbnail represents. What this means (partially) is that if you have a different directory structure on the new computer ThumbsPlus can not match the thumbnails with the images because they are no longer where ThumbsPlus expects them to be. (As the folder has changed, or the volume label(s) are different.)

The easiest way to move the database file, (the default database type is *.tpdb8), is to make sure you have the exact same directory structure with the exact Volume Labels on the NEW system, so the thumbnails and other thumbnail data will match up with the files. If this is not possible, you can open the database on the new computer, and you will see the offline (old) drive with a red exclamation point and/or grey folders. If the directory structure is the same, you can drag the offline drive to the new drive. (The offline drive will have a red ! on it in the folder tree.) If the directory structure has changed you will need to drag the folders individually as long as the CONTENTS of the folders have not changed...even if the folder name has. Again, if you are not concerned with the ThumbsPlus thumbnails and data, it's easiest just to install ThumbsPlus on the new drive and re-create your thumbnails and data.

Please note that here are ways to use ThumbsPlus that makes it much easier to re-create thumbnail data if a database is lost:

* Keywords: Automatic keyword generation from different criteria like image names and folder names and more. If your images and folders are named logically this makes it much easier to automatically create keyword data when making thumbnails. OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>KEYWORDS

* Image Metadata may be a great solution as the Metadata is stored in the images themselves and not in the ThumbsPlus database. Then using ThumbsPlus options, you can automatically create database keywords, annotations and udf's from Metadata upon thumbnail creation. Options>Preferences>Metadata. (If you do use Metadata, not only is the Metadata available in other imaging programs, but creating ThumbsPlus database information from the Metadata makes creating a new database on a new system much easier.)

The attached images illustrate some of these options.

Yes you can search using part of a filename or part of a keyword.

Images are attached that illustrate both processes.

MOVIE FILE TYPE ISSUE:

ThumbsPlus and MOVIE files with extensions other than the norm:

If you can't even see empty thumbnail boxes for your movie files they most likely have an extension that ThumbsPlus is not set up for, YET!

To set up a new movie format that has an extension that is not included in Options>Preferences>File Types:

Go to Options>Preferences>File Types>New and type in the extension of these movie files.

Configure the new file type as "Equivalent to" .mpg.

I have attached an image that illustrates adding a new movie type and configuring it to be equal to the .mpg format.

The .heic file type is the most asked for format in quite some time.  This newer format will be supported in ThumbsPlus v11.

While you wait for the addition of support for the heic/heif file format in ThumbsPlus note that there is a way to change the format that images are saved in - in the iphone settings.

In addition to changing the iphone settings to save your pictures in a different format, there are features in ThumbsPlus that may be helpful if you want to thumbnail ANY image types that are proprietary or not yet supported.

1. If Windows Explorer shows thumbnails for a file format that is not internally supported by ThumbsPlus, if you set up the file type configuration for that type and use NONE for the file loading option, ThumbsPlus will pick up the thumbnail that Windows creates.

2. There is a "make from clipboard" option in ThumbsPlus v10 that allows you to create thumbnails of non supported or proprietary formats. Using this feature along with placing a program icon for the application used to create that format is a great work around for many users that wish to manage unsupported file formats. I have explained this function below and the first image attached illustrates it.

Make from clipboard and external program options:

Once this is set up it won't have to be done again and from then on you can use ThumbsPlus in this way to thumbnail any file types that we do not internally support.

a.  Go to OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>FILE TYPES>NEW and set up the new format as shown in the attached image.

b.  You will see empty thumbnail boxes for your non supported files as shown in the attached image.

c.  Open the software that creates these files and bring up the file that is shown in the empty thumbnail box in ThumbsPlus.

d.  Make a screen shot of this same file (IN THE OTHER software) using the ALT+PRINT SCREEN function, or EDIT>COPY.

e.  Go into ThumbsPlus and find the empty thumbnail box and select it by clicking it once as shown in the attached image.

f.  Go to THUMBNAIL>MAKE FROM CLIPBOARD.

g.  Now you will see the thumbnail for that file.

h.  Because of the way we set up this file type, upon double clicking the image, ThumbsPlus will send it to the associated software program to open.

NOTE! If you have "Create persistent .tp_jptn files for thumbnails made from clipboard" enabled under Main Window - Options | Preferences | Thumbnails, ThumbsPlus will keep a copy of the thumbnail image (named with the .tp_jptn file extension)  in the same folder as the selected file. This allows ThumbsPlus to remake the thumbnail later.

3. You can also put a toolbar icon on your ThumbsPlus toolbar for any program. That way you can click any regularly created thumbnail (or a clipboard created thumbnail) and then click the program icon on the toolbar to open the image in that program.

To add an External Program toolbar button, right click the toolbar and go to "customize">"programs". I don't have a program that creates the heic/heif files so I have shown you how to put a Firefox icon on the ThumbsPlus toolbar in the 2nd attached image. (You can use this same process to put any program on your computer on the toolbar in ThumbsPlus.)
