ThumbsPlus v10 Questions / File Searching Question
« on: 2017-02-19 18:23:20 »
That did it!

I used numeric values (1 - 5) and found exactly what I wanted. I even used '0' and found all of my unrated files.

I'm a happy TP user again! lol

Thanks so much, Daan, for your help!

Be Well,
D

Thanks, Daan, but I already tried that with this:

 tn.[rating] = ***

and got an error message:

Database error: <-3100*42000>

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression '([TN].[name] like '%' AND ([TP].idVol]=2 AND [TP].[name]=Pa_RaM000)) OR (tn.[rating]=***)'.

I have no idea how to interpret this error. The Advanced tab appears to be for SQL statements only. I don't use SQL unless it's built into Access or TP10 in some way.

Your thoughts?

Thanks again for your quick reply!

ThumbsPlus v10 Questions / File Searching Question

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
TP10 sp1 4011 (Registered for many years :-) )
M$ Access 2010

I have a database of hundreds of video files. In the Primary window I have each file showing the following:

1. Thumbnail image
2. File name
3. Rating (1-5 stars (*) entered in the Metadata Info box)
4. Length of video (User defined)

I'm unable to search based on Rating. When I click on the FIND button, I can find files based on file name, keywords, and length, but not Rating.

I'd like to be able to search for all files rated 3 stars, for example, or even files with NO stars (not yet rated). How can I do this?

I know it can be done because I've done it before. Sadly, however, I've forgotten what I did to do it. Can anyone suggest a way?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Daan -

All is well now. It's fixed. :-)

You're right that it was no surprise. I was just angry and frustrated that I wasn't sure how to fix it. It took many, MANY hours to create those databases. I let my anger and frustration cloud my thinking.

Another forum member, Gary, pointed out that the fix should be made in MS Access. I suspected as much and he was right! I described the entire process in a reply to him elsewhere in this forum.

Regardless, thanks for your response to my cry for help. Always appreciated.

Be Well,
D

Gary -

Your most recent post doesn't appear in the forum, but you sent me in the right direction and both databases are now fixed! :-D

You were right that I needed to open the database in TP9, then from the menu click on Database\Advanced\Open in MS Access, then go to the Volume table.

After I'd moved the folders for both databases from within TP9 and tested, I made two changes in Windows: I changed the volume name and the drive letter from "N" to "J".

I corrected the volume name in the "label" field as you suggested, but there was one more thing to fix. In the field "netname" it showed "\\\n$". I changed the "n" to "j". I saved and closed Access, then closed TP9.

When I reopened TP9 and opened my database, it came up exactly as it should - all fixed!

I did the same thing for my other database and it's working fine now, too.

Thank you VERY much for your help in fixing my own mess! Very much appreciated as it took hundreds of hours to make those databases and I didn't want to have to do it again.

Be Well,
D

No, I don't see anything about orphaned thumbnails. Also, except in MS Access - from within TP9, I no longer have my databases, so there are no entries to change.

Regardless, thanks so much for your quick reply to try to help.

Windows 7 Pro SP1
TP9 3943

I have two databases in TP9. From within TP9, I moved the corresponding folders/files to a new external drive. Both databases seemed to be OK after that.

Later, from Windows, I changed the drive letter of the new drive. Now, when I try to open either database from TP9, it doesn't appear.

When I go to the folders, new thumbnails are created, but all of the keywords, annotations, etc. are gone. I can get to the database in MS Access and I suspect the problem has to do with the volume name/serial number or whatever.

I have backups for both databases, but when I click "Restore" from the menu, nothing happens.

What should I do or look for to fix this?

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Visible length of a video?

Sadly, I can't get TP to auto-copy the values to a same-named user field in the database, or even just to show it in the metadata panel. I tried a user field named 'duration' as well.. no luck. I agree it would be very useful.

Yes, I found that field, too. But it won't even appear in the Metadata pane. The field is there, but no value, though that's true for almost all of the metadata in the list.

Thanks for trying, Daan, and replying so quickly. It helps.

Thanks, Daan. I'd hoped that would be the case. Entering keywords, etc. is hard enough, but much worse to do it over again.

> > Many years ago, when I did this, I lost all of my keywords.

> Well, that would be the first time that I hear of that happening. Of course, it will happen when you use Explorer or a different program to do the moving 'behind TPs back'. That would make the files look new to TP, and it would have to create new thumbnails (or rather: new database records, starting from scratch) for them.

Exactly. When I said 'many years ago', it was with one of the very earliest versions of Thumbsplus. I'm one of those 20-year customers mentioned in the newsletters. Until now, I've been afraid to enter keywords ever since. :-)

Thanks again, Daan, for confirming that moving the folder within TP will keep the database intact.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Visible length of a video?
« on: 2014-09-07 19:46:46 »
TP9 SP1 3938
Windows 7 SP1

It would be very useful to have the length of a video visible in TP. Ideally, it would be nice to have it with the thumbnail, but I've found no option to do this. It would also be nice for music files.

TP captures the video length from somewhere (?) and includes it under File Properties in the Details tab. I created a User Field called Length, and have been copying the length from the Details tab and pasting it to the User Field. This is horribly tedious. There must be a better way to do this.

Does anyone know of a better way?

Thanks in advance!

TP9 SP1 3938

I currently have one database containing video files in one folder on my hard drive. I've been adding keywords, ratings, and a user field.

If I have to move the source folder (the one that contains the files) - within TP9 - to another hard drive, what will happen to those keywords, etc? Will they follow? If not, is there a workaround?

Many years ago, when I did this, I lost all of my keywords. I'd like to prevent this from happening again.

Thanks in advance!!
