> There is no thumbs9.ini in thumbsplus 9. I even made one and did what u said and it didn't pan out either :,(

Go to Help | System Information and look at the preferences path. That's where you'll find your thumbs9.ini file.

This used to work for v7 and may well still work in v9:

[*]Exit TP
[*]Open THUMBS9.INI in a text editor (eg. Notepad) and add this line to the [AutoPaste] section:
SaveStateForStartup=1

[*]Launch ThumbsPlus and enable Auto Clip Save.
Glad to hear that it works!

Yes, a Heineken in my honor would be great.. 'Proost'! :-)

> [..] but then a logical disconnect kicked in.

That's weird, Paul.. are you sure that you specified a valid database on the command line (within quotes if necessary) and that TP had read/write access to it?

It seems to work fine here. I have created two shortcuts that each point to a different database. They work as expected regardless of the order in which I launch them, and that's with a thumbs.ini that specifies a different startup database.

However, in the [Startup] section of my Thumbs9.ini file, I also notice this setting:

SaveStartupDB=0

..the name of which suggests that the currently used database won't be saved as the default startup database for the next time (I guess that's how the 'last used' option in Preferences | Startup was implemented.. if 'on', the value here would be '1'). Anyway, as said, my TP9 is configured to open a specific database at startup, and a database specified on the command line seems to override that without problem (I've tried this with build 3936 of early April).

As for the idea of multiple installations, that might not be possible due to a registry key that defines the folder where TP looks for its INI file (and so, you would still have only one .ini file). Another option might be to write four batchfiles, each of which copies one of 4 different ini files (each containing a different startup database setting) to thumbs9.ini and then launches TP. A drawback of that approach would be that any changes that you make to your preferences won't be preserved because the thumbs9.ini gets overwritten upon the next program launch. Still, from what my little experiments show, it shouldn't be necessary to resort to such an exotic solution.

Aaw now you got me blushing.. :-)

Thank you for the very kind words.

You can specify the name of the database on the command line.

When you right-click on a shortcut and choose Properties, the 'target' field shows the command line.

It may currently say something like "C:\Program Files\Thumbs9\Bin\Thumbs9.exe" (including the quotes). Put the full path and filename to the database behind that (also within quotes if it contains spaces) and the shortcut should launch TP with that database when you try it next. For example:

"C:\Program Files\Thumbs9\Bin\Thumbs9.exe" "d:\photos\databases\1990-2000.tpdb8"

So, you could start by making four copies of your regular TP9 shortcut and then editing the 'target' of each one to launch a different database. Of course, you can edit the shortcut's name as well.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / MariaDB connection

In that case I'd turn on SQL logging in the ODBC administrator, try again to connect to the database and see if the logfile contains any hints as to what is going wrong (and be sure to turn logging off afterwards).

> ok I was finally able to get it to show up in the connect list but now I get this message

Looks like you haven't made a data source yet. Run Start > Run > odbcad32 to launch the ODBC configuration tool, then make a file DSN or system DSN for your database. See also pages 5+6 of [link]ftp://ftp.cerious.com/pub/cerious/sqlserver.pdf[/link].

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / MariaDB connection

If the Mariadb service is running and you have made the ODBC connection to the database, you should be able to open the database through Database | Connect in ThumbsPlus.

> I fully get all the excuses [..]

No Frolin, there *have* been significant e-mail delivery issues. For instance, for a long time, AOL/Compuserve used to block e-mail from the IP-range that cerious.com is part of (not cerious' fault). Also, many users and mail providers do have pretty bad spam settings.

While I agree that Cerious' responsiveness seems sub par and unreliable (something that I'd hoped this forum would help resolve, but Cerious' participation here is minimal too), the few cases that I've seen looked into all turned out to be related to e-mail delivery problems.

> Remember, I get their sales and update notices,

I can't remember something if you haven't mentioned it before.

In closing, if your messages concerned beta versions, I don't think you should be expecting any responses to begin with. As buggy as the regular releases may have been, the purpose of beta versions is testing, not production work, and bugs are expected.

> just curious if other had had the lack of reply from Cerious Support, that I have seen in recent years ?

There have been many such complaints, but there've also been many e-mail delivery problems. When you write to Cerious, it helps if you mention thumbsplus in the title of your message and mention an alternate e-mail address in your message, and (particularly) if you whitelist cerious.com and thumbsplus.com in your email program. Also check the spamfilter for any replies that they may have sent to you but that were automaticaly deleted on your or your provider's side.

> The works for me, but won't for someone who wants to see the .cpt files along with all other.

They'll just have to set up a different opening method for those files in the filetype definitions (right-click on a file of that type and choose Configure Type).

Corel Photopaint files were TIFF-compatible until CPT v6, and you'll probably be able to open those with a "Load Using" value of Internal or Poly Image (or keep the default setting of Equivalent to TIFF). For more recent .cpt files, which are in a proprietary format that nobody but Corel can read, an OLE connection to Corel Photopaint might do the trick.

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Sort by similarity
« on: 2014-05-06 11:10:34 »
[*]What filetype(s) are you trying to sort?
[*]Which windows version do you use?
[*]Are the images in a regular local folder? (not gallery or network)
[*]How many thumbnails are (roughly) shown for this folder?
[*]Were all thumbnails made using the same thumbnailing settings (size, sharpening, etc)?
[*]Were the thumbnails produced using this copy of v9, or imported/converted from an older database?
[*]Have you tried recreating the thumbnails in that folder?
[*]Have you tried to first select the image that you're most interested in seeing duplicates of, and then resorting the display?
764
You can remove or disable .cpt files through that same Filetypes dialog. They're a subtype of TIF in the Images category.

Is "Options | Preferences | Thumbnails | Max File size for MD5 Computation" set high enough to include the files that you want to sort? If not, set it to a high enough value, re-make your thumbnails and try again.
