they are certainly there, although yeah, I think perhaps new thumbnails.  why would new thumbnails matter??

Because the gallery entries referred to the old thumbnails. If they have been deleted, the gallery ends up empty. This wouldn't happen if you renew a thumbnail (F3), but when thumbnails are deleted and new ones are made, the connections to any galleries that they were in are lost too.
