ThumbsPlus v10 Questions / Renaming mp4 file kills video
« on: 2018-06-06 12:20:35 »
Daan,
On [link=https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/74adc717-7778-45d6-a779- 573eaab9cd30/mp4-file-corruption?forum=w7itpromedia]social.technet.microsoft…[/link]
provides a manual editing method to cure the files. It worked on some of my files only. But further down in the discussion someone in Grenoble (France) offers a program, which does all what is needed: MP4XtraAtomRemover. It works perfectly!
And of course i have disabled that darn service.
So we can close our discussion here. Thank You again for Your help with the right pointers!

Klaus

Hi Daan,
If you see wmpnetwk.exe there, please stop or disable it and see if that solves the problem.

Great success: after stopping this service the video stays intact after renaming it!
So i will prevent this service from starting, because for me it has no value. I do not share anything with anybody.

There's a discussion about a similar case here ...

I will try the method to fix the currupted videos - if no success, it's not the death of my country...

Thank You very much, Daan, for your help to find the source of my problem.
Klaus

Thanks Daan for your help.

File Type Configuration says:
Extension: mp4 MPEG Level 4 video
  Equivalent to type: (none)
  Load file using: None
  Edit file using: Association VLC.mpeg4
  Print file using: None
  Linked (associated) file extensions:

With these settings I have a poster image and I can SHIFT-click to view it in VLC.

But as soon as I rename the file the poster image disappears and I get the VLC icon. Nothing has changed in File Type Configuration.
I can view this file with SHIFT-click in VLC, it has the same length/duration as before, but there is no image viewed.
Renaming it back does not cure the symptoms.

"At this point, I would suspect that you have an unknown program running in the background that interferes with the handling of video files."

Task Manager shows the processes listed on image-1
I suspected WSHelper.exe (Wondershare Studio) which is a download helper for videos - and removed it for my next tests.
=> still same behaviour of TP.

"I have downloaded your test file. If possible, could I also download the changed version?"

Dear all,
I had moved from my Android phone (FairPhone2) some short videos to my pc.
At the original location (D:\somewhere) I checked and they were fine.
Copied them into the data base - still ok
Renamed them to something more useful than VID-123456789xyz.mp4
Now the poster image is gone and running them in any video display software (Windows Media player, VLC) the have just the length and some sound, but no image.
You can test with [link=http://www.daube.ch/zz_tests/Sample-FP2.mp4]this file[/link] (just rename to Sample-FP2a.mp4 when in the data base.

When renaming in the Windows explorer no such effect happens.
How can I get the video function back?

Klaus Daube

Edit:
There is a difference in lenght after the rename:
original    50'044'287
renamed     50'044'510
=> Hence it is obvious that T+ does something to the file besides the rename (which imho is in the directory and in the DB-entry and should not influence the file itself).

Other findings:
Moving the file within T+ into another folder has the same effect of destroying it.

Heck,
When finding a mis-displayed image in the slideshow and then
- rotate the thumbnail with Quick operation forward 90°
- then back 90°
the slideshow displays the image correctly !

Unfortunately I must say the same for TP 9 SP2:
[*]Camera has no EXIF information for orientation
[*]Thumbs are correctly oriented without intervention
[*]Preview is turned left with "Options | Preferences | Metadata | Rotate based on XMP/EXIF orientation" unchecked. Need to check this for correct preview.
[*]"Options | Viewing | Other | Use database thumbnail orientation when displaying images" has no effect on orientation of slide show.
[*]"Options | Preferences | Metadata | Don't rotate portrait images"  has no effect on orientation of slide show.
    [/list]
I have older images in my DB which are oriented correctly also in the Slideshow.

    Dear Gurus,

After wake up from hybernation (Thumbs+ open at the time of got to sleep) I always get the error:

Database Error - Invalid Database handle
The file replication service cannot stop replicting the system volume because of an internal error. The event log may have more information.
    ThumbsPlus Pro Message <5015-8016>

Klicking OK just pops up the same message after a moment. I have not checked whether I can click it to an end... Need to kill T+ and start again.

Is this a known problem and will it be fixed?
    My system is W7 x64 SP1, T+ is 9.1.0.3938

Only remedy is to close T+ before hybernating.

    Thank You
    Klaus Daube

    Problem solved!
At [link=http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5611570/how-i-can-retrieve-rows-by-specific-date-in-sql-server]required syntax[/link] I have found the required syntax:

     tn.[file_time_iso] between '2014-11-05 00:00:00' And '2014-11-08 23:59:59'

has to be entered into the SQL statement area in the Find dialogue.

    Dear all,

I try to find a picture in my database with this SQL statement (set up in Edit > Find > Advanced):
     tn.[file_time_iso] >= 2014-11-05

The result in Found Files is the complete database (all pictues)! Even with = rather than >= I get this whole list.
    Adding a time
     tn.[file_time_iso] >= 2014-11-05 00:00:00.000
yields in a Databse error: Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression.

How must the query look like to get the pictures with the file_time_iso starting with november 5 of this year (2014-11-05) ?

Further investigation reveals: everything is OK
[*]Neither the annotations nor the 'private' keywords are gone! All data is still there.
[*]The first start of TP9 SP1 requested to open a database - and obviously I made an error in createing a new database - none of the thumbnails did exist and hence I had to create them anew.
[*]In this new data base - it was stored in the program folder and not in the main image folder - keywords were extracted from images (due to default settings). This gave me impression that my 'privately assigned' keywords had been removed. And of course in this new data base no Annotations could be present.
[*]Opening the database from the main image folder - the one I maintain - shows that all data still exist!
      [/list]
So the whole issue is a 'user error'.

      Thanks for listening

I use Thumbs Plus since 1996 - hence my database has made several conversions. Now in v9 sp1 i discover the miss of all my comments/annotations and most keywords are gone.
I have looked into the db with MS Access 11 and see all my keywords, but no comments.

How to get this information back into view? Especially the comments/annotations are a great miss, because there i noted the source of images etc.
