turn off roll over/mouse over bubbles

Is there a way to turn off the the image preview when you mouse over a thumbnail.

Yes. Go to Options | Preferences | Tab:Thumbnail View, and in the lower right corner of this dialog, disable or reconfigure Popup Tips.
