Welcome to the new ThumbsPlus.com forums!

I have migrated all users who made more than one post to the new forums. Users of the old forums will need to request a new password in order to login, using either your old login name or email address. New users simply register. You do have to provide a valid email address and confirm your registration by replying.

I have migrated most of the relevant and relatively recent messages from the old forums.

There are several themes available. Visit your Profile to try out different themes and let us know any suggestions.

Hey Daan!

> 1) Installing to C:\Program Files\Thumbs10 was not allowed...

Sorry, XP is too far gone for me to be able to afford to cater to! It causes too many problems to allow installation into Program Files, both for people with UAC and for XP users when they upgrade. During a Windows upgrade, Windows stashes things disallowed in Program Files in bizarre and hidden folders.

> 2) This error message about my folder of choice not being accepted had an OK and a Cancel button...

Fixed in 4002 installer. The cancel button is gone and OK takes you back to the folder selection.

> 3) I went on by installing to C:\Thumbs10, and the installer suggested a Start Menu group 'ThumbsPlus'. Why not 'ThumbsPlus 10', which will not interfere with older and/or future versions?

This is fixed as well.

> 4) When the installer had completed, the last screen offers two boxes that can be marked, 'clean Install' and 'Run ThumbsPlus now'...

Clean install deletes any existing .ini, .config, .vconfig, .mmconfig, and any modified.flt, and .typ files, giving a pretty much virgin version 10 install (except for the database, of course!). I could check if any of these exist before displaying the button, but I try to avoid too much logic in the installer - it's extremely complicated already, and adding more conditional logic tends to make it more likely to break somewhere.

>5) ...Shouldn't these be in the Plugins folder instead?

I have just never moved them to the (planned long ago) plugin folder because it's easier to leave them in bin. I'll eventually remember to quit creating that folder during installation! I didn't read this far in this post yesterday or I would have done it then! :)

> Finally, the desktop icon and quickstart icon produced by the installer contain a comment "ThumbsPlus $VER$" instead of "ThumbsPlus v10".

Fixed. InstallAware is anything but consistent in where you can use variables!

Thanks!
Phillip

I made several changes on how galleries are handled, and I can no longer reproduce this problem.

I've also made it harder to lose changes in gallery order when navigating away from a changed gallery ("The current gallery order has changed. Do you want to save changes?").

Thanks very much!

I'm preparing to release a beta for v9 SP1 in which the problems you listed are fixed. It will probably be available in 3-5 days.

I'll consider the enhancements too (gallery decoration, galleries transferred between databases), but the bugs (yours and others) take priority.

The loss of messages in the forums is completely my fault. I was trying to update things up by adding a ThumbsPlus 9 category and combining some other categories and accidentally deleted, rather than combined, the last category I was merging.

Unfortunately, the cron job for backup hasn't been running since I upgraded Fedora, and the last database backup is from January. I also have a complete virtual machine backup, but I'm not sure of its date because the RAID 10 array it is on is down (waiting on replacement power supply). Once I get it back up, I will try to restore any messages I can.

I apologize for my fat fingers and failure to have a recent backup. There's really no excuse besides the failure of my attention to the forum virtual machine.

The INI settings used to be stored in two files, the Thumbs.ini file and a .tdo file with the same location and name as the database. Things had gotten so complicated with handling network files, multiple users, roaming user profiles, user permissions, client/server databases and other mess that I combined them for 8.

I had at one point during 8 betas stored the database settings directly in the database itself, but this unfortunately was noticeably slower to read without rewriting the profile code Additionally, command line processing was completely replaced and I probably simply missed the -i code.

I'll try to think and implement the best/most reasonable solution for the next build.

Applies to
ThumbsPlus 8 SP1 Build 3535

Problem
In my fixes to better support the Windows Icon file type, I broadened the files which are recognized as .ICO. This is often preventing the opening of files with no extension or non-standard extensions.

Solution
This will be fixed in a future patch or update. In the meantime, be sure to save files with proper extensions.

More Information
Unlike Explorer, ThumbsPlus never hides the extension, as it is an integral part of the name on Windows. This will also make them more compatible with other programs, which usually won't load them with improper extensions anyway.
