Title: Database question
Post by: rumboogy on 2015-12-31 11:03:30
Just curious.

I have my photography files on a separate drive (a second internal drive) in my computer and I have thumbnailed all 700,000+ images. This drive is set up the following way...

DRIVE E:
--1998 Images Folder
     -----Portraits Folder
     -----Sports Folder
     -----Wildlife Folder
     -----Still Life Folder
     -----Weddings Folder
--2015 Images Folder
     -----Portraits Folder
     -----Sports Folder
     -----Wildlife Folder
     -----Still Life Folder
     -----Weddings Folder

Now I want to actually put these in a PARENT folder to look like this...

DRIVE E:
-Photography Folder
  --Images 1998 Folder
         -----Sports Folder
         -----Wildlife Folder
         -----Still Life Folder
         -----Weddings Folder
  --Images 2015 Folder
         -----Sports Folder
         -----Wildlife Folder
         -----Still Life Folder
         -----Weddings Folder

So my ONLY question is ... If move all those folders at one time into the new PARENT FOLDER (Photography Folder)...will I have to make all new thumbnails? Since the path has changed to include the Photography Folder?

Thanks.

Wally

Nevermind...I found out myself.

Yes, you do have to re-index your files if you change the path.

Thanks.

No you don't.. not if you use ThumbsPlus to move the folders into the new parent folder.

If you do it from outside ThumbsPlus, then it has no way of knowing what happened. Your thumbnails will be orphaned since no matching images can be found for them anymore. If you let ThumbsPlus do the moving, it can simply update the location for each thumbnailed image as it moves it.

Thank you....I'll remember that the next time for SURE. I've already started the new DB...so I'll just go with it. I made some config changes anyway. No harm, no foul...but I'll know if I ever need to do it again.

Thanks,

Wally

You also can (in TP) move the (orphaned) thumbnails from the not exiting files to (equally named) exiting ones.
