ThumbsPlus v10 FAQ / Do you have ThumbsPlus for a Mac
« on: 2018-05-22 14:19:44 »
Although ThumbsPlus is not written for a Macintosh,  there are many users that run the current ThumbsPlus (v10) on a Macintosh with a Windows emulator.

The most popular Windows emulating software reported is Parallels. (There are others available such as VMWare.) We do get positive reports from those who wish to use ThumbsPlus but have gone over to the Mac. However, we can not sguarantee support of ThumbsPlus if it is being used on a Macintosh, even using an emulator, as it wasn't written for that platform.

Currently we do not have the resources for or any plans to develop a Macintosh version.

47
ThumbsPlus runs on Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 and Vista.  Also supported are Windows Server 2012, 2008, 2003. Both 32 and 64-bit operating systems versions are supported, as are Server R2 releases.

Reports that ThumbsPlus will run on XP (SP3) are favorable but we do not officially support users that are running ThumbsPlus on XP SP3.

ThumbsPlus v10 information:

ThumbsPlus is an image management software that uses a relational database that can be customized in many ways.  ThumbsPlus creates thumbnails and makes it easy to catalog, organize, locate and maintain all of your graphics, multimedia and font files.

ThumbsPlus runs on Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista and on Windows Server 2012, 2008, 2003. Both 32 and 64-bit operating systems versions are supported, as are Server R2 releases.

ThumbsPlus is a photo organizing and searching software that includes editing, viewing, BATCH conversion/editing/resizing, metafile support, image filtering, contact sheet creation, printed catalogs, display of slide shows, changing wallpaper, launch external editors, install and remove True Type Fonts, handle offline media and automatically save screen and window captures. ThumbsPlus supports all common digital cameras and file formats as well as digital video.

ThumbsPlus Partial Feature list:

ThumbsPlus supports over 100 file formats internally with many more configurable using OLE or filters

ThumbsPlus can write (convert to) jpg, jp2, gif, png, tif, tga, bmp, raw, wmf, ico, cmp and pcx.

Image Management/Image Information and FINDING FILES:

ThumbsPlus stores its information in a relational database, allowing enormous flexibility in searching for files. Each tab on the Find window allows for searching for different kinds of information, and the Advanced tab allows you to enter SQL directly.

User-defined fields for categorizing and searching
Keywords,
Annotations
Galleries
Found file lists
METADATA

You can search for files in hundreds of different ways including and combining the following:

User Defined Fields
Keywords
Partial and full file names
Duplicate and similar images
Annotations
Advanced SQL statements

EXAMPLES:

Searching with a partial filename and a UDF
Finding similar images to a specific image
Finding similar images in a current folder or file list
Searching the entire database for similar files

Editing images in ThumbsPlus:

Most editing features can be done in a batch mode.

Batch processing is one of the most useful and powerful capabilities of ThumbsPlus. A "batch" is a group of files, and batch processing performs a set of operations on each file in the batch. Here are just a few examples of the COUNTLESS batch processes that you can do:

· Convert a group of files from one format to another.

· Convert several files of varying types, including metafiles, rasterizing to 800x800, sharpening a bit, cropping to 800x600, then resampling to 640x480  and saving as JPEG to a different folder.

· Create a bunch of thumbnail-sized JPG files for the Web (for complete Web page building, you can use the Web Page Wizard as well).

· Convert a group of GIF or LZW-compressed TIFF files to PNG.

· Rasterize several PICT or CGM files, with anti-aliasing, and storing as LZW-compressed TIFF.

· Convert a bunch of files to a 256-color common optimum palette ("Super palette") for use in a GIF or other animation.

You can save defined batch sets and reuse them later on different sets of files. You can even call a batch set from within another batch set! (This can be useful, for example, to write two files – say, a GIF and a JPEG – from each input file.)

Partial editing feature list:

Rotate and Resize options
Color adjustment options
Color Depth
Color Balancing/in batch mode as well
Replace colors
SWAP Red and Blue
Invert Colors
Histogram/Equalize/Stretch
Set resolution
Crop/Autocrop
Create and Render Alpha channels
Assign color profiles
Image stamping (overlay text or image)
Image fading
Color Management support
Freehand select, paste into
Rotate to line.
Combine images (add, subtract, multiply, divide, and, or, xor, etc.)

ThumbsPlus v7-v9 Questions / Upgrade from 7 to 10?
« on: 2016-03-24 14:50:51 »
ThumbsPlus v10 gives you the option to create an MS Access database without the 2 GB limit!

Out of the box the ThumbsPlus v10 database has a 2 Gb limit. HOWEVER, for quite some time there have been many ways to configure and/or use other database options that will allow for a larger size capacity EVEN when using this default MS Access database.

** This MS Access database can store millions upon millions of thumbnails.

** ThumbsPlus v10 also gives this option WHEN converting a v7 database to the v10 MS Access database!

** If you have a database that has reached the default size limit of 2 Gb's a Python script can be used to greatly increase the database size capacity.

(In v10 SP1 BETA build 4007 this script is included in the ADVANCED DATABASE options.)

** Configuring a new database using the option to "store thumbnails in files" increases the size capacity giving you the room to thumbnail millions upon millions  of image files!

** When creating a new database (DATABASE>NEW) you will check this option to "store thumbnails in files" as this is how you create a database with much more space for your data. I have attached an image that illustrates your database choices further.

** If you think that you will be thumbnailing terabytes upon terabytes of images and think that more than millions upon millions of images will need to be thumbnailed then you very well may want to consider using another ODBC database such as SQL Server.

There is more information about other Client/Server database options here:

ThumbsPlus v10 Questions / 4005 vs 4007
« on: 2016-03-24 13:52:57 »
ThumbsPlus Users:

ThumbsPlus v10 Build 4004 has a bug in the main interface that was/is causing a ton of trouble. (This bug was not caught in BETA but was fixed in build 4005.)

In build 4004, in most cases, if you move any panel in the ThumbsPlus main interface, everything stops working. In some instances the program will not even close.

The work around for this bug is to go to WINDOW>LAYOUT>DEFAULT LAYOUT or LIKE v7 LAYOUT. However, in some cases the user has to remove most of the personal preferences to get this working again.

I have requested to have build 4005 built as the official v10 current release for months so that I would not have to deal with this support issue. Many people were caught by this bug when first evaluating ThumbsPlus which caused them to throw it away!

We decided NOT to suggest BETA build 4007 because IT has a rather bad problem when renaming folders. (The focus jumps and you end up renaming the incorrect folder.)

There is a link to this information is on the top of our webpages:
http://www.cerious.com/release_notes10.shtml

I am sorry for the confusion. I am waiting impatiently for the next BETA build of ThumbsPlus v10 SP1. It will be BETA 3, build 4008. Hopefully after running that build for a short time we will be able to officially release v10 SP1.

These groups are for ThumbsPlus users to help each other due to popular request. This is not a way to receive support or answers from Cerious Software.

Again, I ask you kind forum members, if there is a question about ANYTHING here that you would like our opinion about, PLEASE have someone e-mail support@cerious.com then they can share our response here.

Kind regards,

ThumbsPlus v10 Questions / Oh wait
« on: 2015-11-05 10:45:29 »
I don't know if you noticed in this thread, the solution that another user found on the Internet about this InstallAware problem:

"This can happen with an installer if it's based on InstallAware. One thing to check is if there's a file in your Temp folder called "mia1" -- InstallAware installers try to create a folder by the same and if there is a file there by that name they throw the "setup resource decompression failure". If you find that file, delete it and re-run your setup."

If this doesn't solve your problem and the temp environment variable is pointing to a valid folder please e-mail me at support@cerious.com for more assistance. I haven't had one user that wasn't helped with one of these 2 solutions.

Kind regards,
Laura

Thanks again for the tip ThumbsPlus supporters!

Daan is correct Nick. You should be able to view your raw files without installing the Digicam plug-in.

Kind regards,
Laura

There is another feature that may be an alternative to view file types that ThumbsPlus doesn't support internally.

Adding external programs.

The images below show the process. Please let me know if you have questions.

Kind regards,
Laura

57
While ThumbsPlus does not support these files internally I think that I can help you configure the format using the Make From Clipboard thumbnails options.

Once this is set up for this file format it won't have to be done again and from then on you can use ThumbsPlus in this way to thumbnail your PES files!

1.  Go to OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>FILE TYPES>NEW and configure the file type as shown below:

2.  Now you will see empty thumbnail boxes for your PES files:

3.  Now, open your embroidery software and bring up the first file that is shown in the empty thumbnail boxes in ThumbsPlus.

4.  Now make a screen shot of this same PES same file (IN THE EMBROIDERY software) using the ALT+PRINT SCREEN function.

5.  Now go into ThumbsPlus and find that first empty PES thumbnail box and select it by clicking it once.

6.  Now go to THUMBNAIL>MAKE FROM CLIPBOARD.

7.  Now you will see the thumbnail as shown below!

8.  If you have Create persistent .tp_jptn files for thumbnails made from clipboard enabled under Main Window - Options | Preferences | Thumbnails, Thumbsplus will keep a copy of the thumbnail image (named with the .tp_jptn file extension) in the same folder as the selected file. This allows ThumbsPlus to remake the thumbnail later.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can help further!

Kind regards,
Laura

ThumbsPlus v10 Questions / Oh wait
« on: 2015-10-27 15:04:03 »
Just yesterday this same statement was sent to me by a ThumbsPlus user that found it to be THE fix for this issue in HIS case.

My response to this issue thus far has been that the temp environment variable is either read only or not set to a valid folder.

If anyone else is having this trouble and the problem is NOT caused by the file "mia1" in the temp folder:

Make sure your TEMP environment variable is a valid and writable folder on a local disk. This path is used for temporary files in the installer/uninstaller.

You can check the environment variable using Control Panel - System -
Advanced - [Environment Variables].

Go to your start menu and type this exactly:

%TEMP% then hit enter.

Both paths should match.

Thank you everyone for your support!

Kind regards,
Laura

Somebody said that something is wrong at Cerious. Yes, it is ME!

I don't know why or where that came from but when I asked Phillip about this last night he told me that he DOES intend that checks for updates are sent/received for each new build.

Sorry, human error.

Cerious Software never denied that this was a problem! We just couldn't reproduce it.

The fact that there were only 2 or 3 reports of this behavior and hours of testing on my part to no avail - it was one of those issues that couldn't be addressed.

I saw it happen once. Then I couldn't make it happen again. Since I do so much testing I didn't know what caused it and I couldn't duplicate it again.

Last week, with help from a very nice Cerious Software customer I was able to make a few UDF entry problems happen, all connected with the same bug. Once I knew how to recreate it I was able to show the programmer and he promptly fixed it!

EVERYONE PLEASE NOTE:

As I announced last week, if you have problems, bug reports, suggestions, crashes, the route to receive technical support is to write support@cerious.com

When you send a message to support@cerious.com you will be assigned a case number and I will respond with questions, answers and suggestions. The correspondence stays with the case, it can be searched for and I stick with the issue until it is resolved.

These groups are for ThumbsPlus users to help each other. I am going to do my best to drop by as often as possible. If you see an issue here that you think Cerious Software needs to respond to please e-mail me at support@cerious.com so that I know to come by and try to help.
