1. The next time you download an update, please choose the "Express Install" as this will place the database and your preferences in the same folders and you will not lose your thumbnails or options when you launch the update for the first time. (Or you can go to HELP>SYSTEM INFORMATION before updating and take a look at the last install options you used and use the same options with the install of the update.)

2. If you want to reset the preferences back to the default settings you will need to remove 3 files from the ThumbsPlus Preferences Folder.  thumbs10.ini, thumbs10.config and thumbs10.vconfig.

The ThumbsPlus Preferences folder is located in the ThumbsPlus 10 program group. The attached image illustrates how to find the location and delete the preferences. After deleting these files, the next time you launch ThumbsPlus the settings will be back to the default.

ThumbsPlus is NOT responsible for the thumbs.db files. (NO REALLY!!) These files are created by Windows. To find more information about the thumbs.db files please do an Internet search for "thumbs.db" or "what are thumbs.db files and can I delete them".

1. If a file type is associated with another program you can right click a thumbnail and choose "Edit" to open the image in the associated program.

2. If you want to always open a certain file format in another program, right click a thumbnail of that type of image and go to "Configure Type". Change "Load file using" to None.
(HINT:  Setting up a file type configuration for unsupported file types to "Load using None" will use the internal Windows thumbnail if available.)

3. If you want to always open EVERY type of file in another program, go to Options>Preferences>General and choose "Edit image" for "Default Action".

4. You can put a toolbar icon for any program on the ThumbsPlus toolbar!

Right click the toolbar and go to "Customize", then select the "Programs" tab.

The attached image illustrates this process.

Photoshop, .psd file type support:

There are a couple of reasons why you may not be able to thumbnail and/or view your .psd files.

1. The file type configuration may not be set up correctly. The first attached image illustrates the correct configuration.

2. Maximum Compatibility must be used with .psd files in order for ThumbsPlus to be able to view and thumbnail them. There have been different names for this option in Photoshop. I remember when it was called saving with a "composite image" many years ago.

(.psd files that are not saved with "maximum compatibility" are proprietary and EXTREMELY complicated to try and reverse engineer.)

A. If you don't want to resave all of your .psd files with the compatibility mode, you can configure this file type to "Load using" Poly Image. This will work but it probably won't work perfectly with complicated layered files. However, the thumbnail and view may be sufficient for your needs. Loading .psd files using Poly Image along with the option of putting a Photoshop toolbar button on the ThumbsPlus toolbar may be a great solution for you!

B. You can put a toolbar icon on your ThumbsPlus toolbar for any program. If you put Photoshop on the ThumbsPlus toolbar you can select a thumbnail and then click the program icon on the toolbar to open the image in Photoshop.

Right click the toolbar and go to "customize">"programs". In the second image attached I have illustrated how to put a Photoshop icon on the ThumbsPlus toolbar. (You can do this with any program on your computer!)

If you click on a folder that does have images but you don't see any thumbnails or "thumbnail not available" boxes it is possible that something has been typed in the "Name Mask" area.

Simply remove that text or click on the "funnel" button and chose "Selected files" or "All files". The attached image illustrates this problem and how to fix it.

If you want ThumbsPlus to be associated with your image file types you should use the ThumbsPlus program (instead of Windows) to perform this task.

The option to associate file types with ThumbsPlus is found in the file type configuration dialog box for each image type.

There are 2 different ways to get to the file type configuration dialog box for a an image type.

Go to Options>Preferences>File types and expand the "All" entry. Scroll to the type you wish to associate with ThumbsPlus and double click it (or click "Edit"). In this file type configuration check the option to "Associate this file type with ThumbsPlus".

or

Right click a thumbnail of an image of the type you wish to associate with ThumbsPlus and go to "Configure type". In this file type configuration check the option to "Associate this file type with ThumbsPlus".

An image is attached to illustrate these methods.

Because some selected types shouldn't be associated with ThumbsPlus, the association for each format must be done individually.

There have been reports that the latest Windows 10 release is hijacking associations that have been performed using Windows. Everyone has reported that using ThumbsPlus to associate their image files has fixed this problem.

You do not have to be a member of PayPal or sign up for anything to use our ordering system.

When placing your order you will be taken to the PayPal interface. To order with a debit or credit card simply click the "continue" button instead of the "Log in " button when you get to the "Pay with PayPal" page.

The attached image illustrates the entire process.

*NOTE* if you were a PayPal member in the past or if you are a current member but wish to use a debit or credit card, simply log out of PayPal before beginning the ordering process.

Any time you inadvertently move the panels around in the main interface, you can go to Window>Layout> and choose "Default Layout" to reclaim the default interface. The first attached image illustrates this process.

There are tons of ways to customize your main layout. There are even layout options to make v10 look and feel more like v7.

Additional images are attached that illustrate just a few layout and theme options.

In the ThumbsPlus 10 evaluation and in the PRO and Network registered Editions there is support for .pdf, .ps, .eps and .ai files.

If you can't create thumbnails or view these types of files or if you are getting Ghostscript errors:

FIRST: Please check and make sure that you are running the latest build from Help>About - ThumbsPlus v10 SP2 build 4015.
(There were issues with builds 4013 and 4014 that would cause crashes rather than error messages.)

If you are running Build 4015 (and are NOT using the Standard Edition),  you are experiencing a problem with an incorrect .dll file, a problem in the Ghostscript plug-in options or the .pdf file type configuration is incorrect.

1. The configuration for .pdf files may be incorrect. Right click a pdf thumbnail and go to "configure type". The attached image illustrates the correct configuration.

2. ThumbsPlus requires the 32 bit Ghostscript .dll. You may have configured ThumbsPlus to use the 64 bit .dll.

3. It could also be that the proper Ghostcript.dll is not in the folder that the path indicates in your Ghostscript Loading Options.

4. It would be a very rare occurrence, but you may not have Ghostscript installed. (This is most likely not the problem, but if you do not have Ghostscript installed, please go to this site, download Ghostscript v9.x and then install it:
http://www.ghostscript.com/download/

For 2 and 3:

Go to OPTIONS>GHOSTSCRIPT PS/EPS/PDF

Take a look at the path to Ghostscript on the top of that dialog box.

Now click the browse button. The one that has ... on it.

When that folder opens you may see the 64-bit dll. If so, choose the 32 bit dll.

OR

It could also be that the proper Ghostcript.dll is not in the folder that the path indicates in your preferences.

You may see that the gs32.dll is NOT in that folder. If it isn't just browse to the folder it is in. (If needed you can do a search on your computer for gs32.dll.)

The attached image was created to illustrate how to solve this problem.

How to increase the amount of thumbnails that an existing database can store:

If you have reached the 2 Gb default database size limit you now have the option to increase the thumbnail count capacity of an existing database!

(Please note that if you do not have keywords, annotations, udf's, offline thumbnails and and/or galleries, starting with a brand new database is another option. Please see FAQ about your database choices.)

To increase the thumbnail count capacity of an existing database that has reached the 2 Gb file size limit, you will first need to release some space that will allow this option room to do its job.

Before beginning, make sure that you have a backup of this existing database!

Database>Advanced>Backup

This way you will have it if anything goes amiss with this process. The ThumbsPlus database holds important data that you should always have a copy of. Databases can be damaged in several ways including a crash or a power outage while the ThumbsPlus database is open. When you are backing up your important data it is a good idea to keep a backup of your image folders as well.

1. Before beginning this process the database needs to be smaller than the 2 Gb size limit.

If there are thumbnails that are old that you do not need any longer, you can remove some of that data from the database.  For example you may have some folders with test images that you do not need thumbnails of.  Right click any folder of this type and go to "remove from folder". This will remove any thumbnails and the associated data for files you do NOT need thumbnails of. (You can always remove some thumbnails that don't have data attached to them and remake the thumbnails after this process has finished as well.)

2.  Run a repair and compact of the database to remove space that has not been recycled.  DATABASE>COMPACT and REPAIR

3.  After the compact, run a JPEG compress on the database as well. DATABASE>JPEG COMPRESS

4.  I suggest the quality to be set between 65 and 75.

Before beginning the process to increase your current database thumbnail count capacity, please note:

*You can NOT stop this process once it has been started or the database will be hopelessly confused and you will have to restore the database from backup.

*This process may take a very LONG time even if you have a fast system!

*If you have more than one database make sure that the database that holds all of your data is the database that is open.

5. Close ThumbsPlus and then relaunch.

6. Go to Database>Advanced>Move Thumbnails to Files.

7. Now you just sit back and wait. Again, the process may take a LONG time. It could be many HOURS. (I have had reports of 10 hours and longer.)

8. When the process is finished, do a another repair and compact.

Your database will now have the increased capacity for 6 to 7 million thumbnails and their associated data.

An image has been attached to illustrate this process.

There are several reasons and solutions for install issues.

Lately, I have been getting reports of virus detecting software removing files from the temp folder that are necessary for the installation of ThumbsPlus.

There are some virus and/or malware detecting software programs that remove these files that we place in your temp folder that are only used for the installation of ThumbsPlus and then removed. These programs are deleting these files that must be available during the installation process.

If you are receiving the following error:

"There is a problem with this windows install package. A DLL required for this to run could not be installed."

My advice is to turn off your virus and malware software while you install build 4015.

NOTE: If you use System Mechanic, you will need to turn OFF the anti-malware System Shield portion of System Mechanic before another attempt to install ThumbsPlus. It has been confirmed that this component of System Mechanic deletes files that the ThumbsPlus installer places in your TEMP folder that are required for the install of ThumbsPlus.

Other common errors during installation, uninstall, and upgrades

If you have ever installed an earlier build of ThumbsPlus v10, the following information may help to solve your installation problem:

The symptom:

Updates or upgrades of ThumbsPlus can't be installed due to an installation error, in some cases an "MSI" error. There are various other error messages, including .dll errors,  during a failure to install ThumbsPlus.

During upgrades, this issue often occurs during UNINSTALL portion of the ThumbsPlus install.

Background information about program installation:

Programs are required by Windows to include with their installation files, files that are needed to uninstall the program. When ThumbsPlus is installed, all of the files needed to uninstall the program are stored in the users Microsoft (Windows) MSI database and cache (which stores install/uninstall files).

This means that when a user attempts to install a new build of the software, the old files from the previous install have to be in this Windows installation database and registry.

Errors occur when, for some reason, these files are not there. These errors may have a myriad of causes, none of which ThumbsPlus.com can control. The most likely causes are third-party registry or uninstaller tools, and other software called "tune-up," "system optimizer etc.  These "tools" tend to remove or change files that shouldn't be removed or changed.

First solution:

The ThumbsPlus installer is required by Windows Installer to uninstall the earlier build before beginning the install of a new build. If the uninstall files that Windows requires for an uninstall are missing or damaged the install will not continue.

If you are getting a message during install about a problem with an earlier build please try this method:

Open Control Panel>Programs and Features> Right click the ThumbsPlus v10 build 4011 and choose "change". Run the Repair/Install.

NOTE: If you are running Windows 10 the following applies:

1. The Settings (instead of Control Panel) is "Add or remove programs" or "Apps & features"--both go to same dialog.

2. Left click on ThumbsPlus to get the choices of MODIFY or Uninstall.

When the modify process completes you should be able to install the latest build!

Next solution:

If the first solution above doesn't solve your installation issue, there is a Windows fix for some other problems, (sometimes MSI or other installation errors).

You can download a file (that is provided by Microsoft), that fixes a problem with the (Windows) MSI database and cache. Microsoft provides this tool explicitly because of problems that occur in the MSI database and cache:

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall/

This should correct the problem on your system with the Windows MSI database and cache and you should now be able to install the latest version. If you continue to have trouble please contact support@thumbsplus.com for additional help.
