I don't think I've heard of this problem before, but I'd recommend that you try these two small freeware tools that deal with Explorer context menus and shell extensions:

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shell_menu_view.html
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

Hopefully one of those will let you reenable TP's context menu entries!

I just realized, you're also on the Ritlabs forum, aren't you?

Haha, yes I am!

Hopefully someone still looks in this subforum.

I do, but I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions!

I don't know the secret recipe either, but the regular thumbnail settings (under Options | Preferences) allow you to choose sharpening and contrast enhancement, so maybe those come into play here as well.

Have you tried if Thumbnail | Export to JPG gives you images of a similar quality?

The Viewer/Editor has an auto-enhancement function in its Image menu that's cryptically named Xe847. One thing that it does is turn anything blueish into a sunny sky blue. Once you know that, it's easy to tell which images have been treated with it. Another possibility could be Histogram stretching.

If you could post a few representative sample images that show the original and web-thumbnailed images for comparison (at the same size), maybe those will offer further clues as to what's happening under the hood.

My pleasure, I'm glad it was solved. I've had the same problem myself a few times! :)

I'd try setting the sorting order (of the thumbnail display) to 'None', and not use either of the 'thumbnails first' or 'thumbnails last' sorting options.  Then go into the folder that was scanned. The first file that has not been thumbnailed correctly is probably the one that caused the error. It's probably a file that requires a plug-in (raw files, pdf, etc) or some other external module (e.g. a zip file). Once you have identified that file, you can temporarily rename or move it, so that you can hopefully complete the thumbnailing with no further errors.

Interesting, and maybe it will help someone else. Thanks again!

Then from a bit more googling I realised I needed to set up the system DNS using the ODBC for SQL Server 2017 driver rather than the native SQL Server driver.

Great to hear that it's working properly again, and thanks for getting back with the solution. If you remember where you read about that solution, I'd be curious to read it too -- do you still have the link? Was it specific to ThumbsPlus or was it a more generic solution for SQL-based databases?

Something else that you could try:

Exit ThumbsPlus, locate your Thumbs10.ini configuration file and make a backup copy of it. Then open it in Notepad and add this section to it:

[Virtualmemory]
Minalloc=0

Save the file and re-launch TP10 to see if it makes a difference. It would disable the built-in virtual memory manager, which can cause delays too. If it does not help, I would exit TP again and restore the previous .ini file.

Are both your harddrives regular internal drives? (not running over a USB port or a network)

Have you read the performance hints on the website? Hopefully those will offer a clue or two: http://www.thumbsplus.com/performance.html

You could also try turning SQL tracing on in Windows, to see if that reveals anything (or turn it off it it already is on, because it does slow things down). Have you tried running (or maybe even reinstalling) TP with Admin rights? And (easier) run it after booting Windows in Safe mode, to exclude that a third party app or driver is interfering?

But does the network show in the tree panel at all? If not, see Options | Preferences | Disks & Folders | Turn off "Do not show network branch".

If the network does show, but not any shared drives or devices within it, go to the same dialog and try tagging the option "Public Locations" in the lower right corner.

If that still doesn't help, could it be that you're running ThumbsPlus from an account that has no access to those locations?

As a work around, have you tried to map those locations to drive letters?

ThumbsPlus v10 Questions / Re: Fuji Raw not supported?

I don't know if it is or isn't possible, but from your report here I guess it isn't. The only possible solution that I can think of is this: try setting the plugins to use the embedded JPG (instead of the raw data) to create a thumbnail. See under Options | Digicam and Options | DCRAW in the main menu.

The DCRAW raw development code that both plugins are based on, is no longer being maintained. So, I don't see how ThumbsPlus will be able to decode new raw formats from new cameras unless Cerious switches to a different raw library.

43
Maybe the folder was refreshed when ThumbPlus read it, and that triggered it..?  Anyway, good that you found the problem and I hope the Dropbox people will fix it!

44
Explorer stores its thumbnail cache for each folder in a file named thumbs.db.

ThumbsPlus ignores those files. I can't think of any way that it might interfere with the Explorer thumbnails on your system.

Somehow, there is a difference in the thumbnailing of one individual movie file and multiple movie files. With the latter, some movie files will fail to get a thumbnail or ThumbsPlus will even crash. I have long ago stopped looking for the cause, and Cerious could never reproduce the problem.

Nowadays, when I want to thumbnail multiple movie files, I simply select them and press INS ('tag file'). That causes them to be added to the Tagged Images gallery, which in turn makes ThumbsPlus thumbnail them in 'individual mode', without crashing or otherwise failing (well, usually). Afterwards, I press Ctrl-INS to remove the tags. So, my suggestion is that you use this as a work-around.
