Cannot Install SP2
« on: 2015-02-08 08:58:02 »
Hello everyone,

I currently use SP1 Build 3938. Responding to the Cerious notification, I decided to install the new version SP2 Build 3945. But sadly, the installation failed.

The attached images show the messages in the resulting dialog boxes.

My system
OS:    Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
RAM:   16 GB
CPU:   Intel i5-2500K
GPU:   Geforce GTX 570

Can anyone advise/explain my predicament?
Thanks for the reply,
Bryan

Just one more frustration with TP ...

Bryan,

Are you comfortable using regedit?

Gary

Gary,
Thanks for the reply.

Bryan,

I would use Control Panel|Programs and Features to manually uninstall ThumbsPlus9.  Download SP2 again (just in case you got a bad download) then try the install.  Hopefully this will work.  If not, you may have to uninstall and manually remove entries from the registry.  But hopefully the uninstall/reinstall alone will do the trick.

Cheers,
Gary

Thanks Gary.

I did as you suggested, and the new version installed.
I can only presume that the issue with the Build 3495 is with the installer program.

Bryan,

Glad that worked for you.  The issue is definitely with the installer logic (or lack there of).

Cheers,
Gary

I'm having the same problem. It was the same with 3943 . Consequently I haven't installed 3943 or 3945 ..
I actually use thumbsplus so much that it would be a big inconvenience to uninstall manually and then find I'm without it.
It also seems worrying that this is being proclaimed as a definitive version when the install problem was addressed on this forum for 3943 .
Sad to read how disappointing the new versions seem to be......
all best from Greg

I use TP a lot as well - would not want to be without.  My go to is TP7.  TP9 is missing so many features and contains so many "bugs" that I use it only to test the releases (hoping against hope TP9 will be equal to or better than TP7).  If uninstalled I would not miss TP9.  TP7 is essential (even with the 2GB database limit).

Thanks Gary... I am getting on OK so far with TP9... I abandoned using it for metadata related stuff a long time ago and adopted IDimager for that (though the version that was useful v.5 was then disowned by its creator, the reincarnation doesn't even have dual screen support, I continue to use the old one).
Anyhow after my last failure to install I sent in a bug report having read this on the  'installation notes' page.
If you encounter problems during the installation, please send us the Thumbs9Install.log from your user TEMP folder along with your problem report. (If you're not sure where this is, hit Win+R, enter %TEMP%, and hit enter, and Explorer will open it for you). The Win key has the Windows logo (Win logo) and is usually between the Ctrl and Alt keys. If your keyboard doesn't have one, consult the documentation for your keyboard and version of windows, or run the command START %TEMP% from a command prompt. Send this file to support@cerious.com, and be sure to provide a meaningful email subject (such as "Unable to install ThumbsPlus 9 build 3935").
I received a reasonably speedy reply which said :-
If the installer for the latest version is unable to uninstall the prior version, and if you cannot uninstall it from Control Panel, then the Windows Installer database is missing the original installer. This is usually caused by some type of registry editor or clean up type program. (Which I avoid at all times.) This error is not caused by ThumbsPlus!

This means that if you have the previous installer for the exact build of ThumbsPlus that was installed last, installing and then running the new installer should fix the trouble.

HOWEVER:

An easier way has been reported to me from other users.  I now have a link to a newer M$ uninstall/install fix executable. I have not announced this yet on the pages yet but if we continue to get great results we will put a link on our pages to it. This file was created to fix this issue caused by an error in the Windows installer folder on your system.

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall/

After this, the new installer should operate correctly.

If you continue to have trouble please let me know!

I did this, which essentially seemed to assist the uninstall of the previous version. Not that clear what was happening and it took quite a while to chug through the uninstall.
The good news (i hope) was that the latest beta went in OK and the installation seems fine... It asks stuff about the menu bar on first opening, the phrasing of that seems unclear to me ... I said yes and it gave me my old menu bar with all the 'open in external program' icons in their place. So far all other settings seem to be as I wanted them.
Hope this may help someone else.
A big query is why cerious hasn't posted anything of this on the forum... it really is as though they don't read the posts and there really aren't that many of them.
all best wishes from Greg

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the information and the link from Microsoft; it might be useful elsewhere later on.

With regard to the quote...
"If the installer for the latest version is unable to uninstall the prior version, and if you cannot uninstall it from Control Panel, then the Windows Installer database is missing the original installer. This is usually caused by some type of registry editor or clean up type program."

I was able to manually uninstall build 3938 from the Control Panel. I then installed Build 3945. An update (Build 3946) was posted later on, which I was able to uninstall/install normally through the TP installer.

Now, I do use a program called CCleaner, which I primarily used to remove cookies and other remnant crap on the system. As for Registry Edits, I specifically target broken links. As such, I don't believe my actions were the cause.

Regards,
Bryan

Greg and Bryan,

Thanks for the updates!

I am not convinced any of us "caused" the install issues.  TP9, including the installer, is riddled with problems NOT of our making.  We are just paying good money for this stuff.

Daan may know for sure, but it appears Cerious ignores the forum and ignores the issues with TP9.

What makes any of us think TP10 will be any better?

Cheers,
Gary

They don't purposely ignore it. Laura Shook (lshook@cerious.com) has addressed the problem several times, e.g. [msg=3737]here[/msg]:

>> NOTE: Please send bug reports to me personally so that I know what problems you are encountering. Again, these forums are peer to peer groups that I simply can't monitor. There are only a few of us here and all of us are simply slammed.
